UPDATED McConnell: Senate will work through first two weeks of August recess

Source: Politico

By SEUNG MIN KIM 07/11/2017 01:37 PM EDT

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) will keep the Senate in session the first two weeks of August, according to two sources, as Republicans face a daunting to-do list that includes repealing Obamacare and raising the debt limit.

McConnell made the announcement during a party lunch on Tuesday, according to one of the sources.

McConnell delays August recess to complete work on health-care bill, other issues

By Kelsey Snell, Sean Sullivan and Juliet Eilperin July 11 at 1:47 PM
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced Tuesday that he will delay the August recess by two weeks to complete work on health-care and other issues.

“In order to provide more time to complete action on important legislative items and process nominees that have been stalled by a lack of cooperation from our friends across the aisle, the Senate will delay the start of the August recess until the third week of August,” McConnell said.

In addition to health care and appointments, the Senate will also devote time to passing a defense authorization bill “and other important issues.”

Work on the Senate’s health-care bill, meanwhile, remained uncertain Tuesday. Senate leaders still planned to release a revised bill by the end of this week and hold votes beginning next week, according to a senior GOP leadership aide.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) planned to make the case to fellow Republicans that they should embrace a radical change to the Affordable Care Act that would allow companies to offer minimalist plans on the private insurance market that don’t meet current coverage requirements.

My opinion: They'll be sorry they stayed. If the news keeps breaking this way (as i think it will) they'd be much better off split up for parts unknown.

Democratic leadership would have to agree,
and were unlikely to do so,
having no reason to help the GOP pass their agenda.

(pretty much per Schumer), so a slowdown would happen in any case. They can't take even a fraction of the amount of obstruction that they meted out.

They gave no source for that "tidbit" and I couldn't find any other mention of it.

"If the bill collapses, McConnell has said that he would focus on writing a more limited bill that likely would require Democratic Support."
