Tillerson Vents About 'Fragmented' Govt: 'Not A Highly Disciplined Organization'

Source: Talking Points Memo

By MATT SHUHAM Published JULY 14, 2017 10:30 AM

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson expressed frustration Thursday at the “fragmented” decision-making processes in the Trump administration, noting the government was “not a highly disciplined organization.”

Tillerson made the comments to pool reporters on the plane ride home from a multi-day trip to the Middle East and Europe, including an attempt at opening discussion between Qatar and other Arab states who accuse it of funding terrorism, the Los Angeles Times reported.

“Well it is a lot different than being CEO of Exxon because I was the ultimate decision-maker,” Tillerson told the reporters, adding: “We had very long-standing, disciplined processes and decision-making — I mean, highly structured — that allows you to accomplish a lot, to accomplish a lot in a very efficient way.”

The Times noted that Tillerson said he didn’t meant to criticize the government, but that “it’s largely not a highly disciplined organization.”

And now throw the Trump administration into the mix, what the hell did Tillerson expect? Why do all these people think just anyone can run a government regardless of education, training and experience?

I there a word for extreme arrogance that is even stronger than "hubris"?

No matter how good, how well esteemed, famous, or talented a Secretary of State is the job is to execute the PRESIDENT's foreign policy. Their input is a function of how trusted and how close their world view is to the President, the personality and the way the President approaches decision making. Not to mention, though the President has enormous power on foreign relations, understanding the role and the people in the Congress is a plus -- as you may need to "sell" at least a core group on what you want to do.

In terms of government, what Tillerson is bemoaning as not existing is a dictatorship. It does bring up memories of GWB saying that it would be easier if this were a dictatorship as long as he was the dictator. This was quickly called a joke, but I would bet that it was GWB making essentially the same observation that Tillerson made.

Not to mention, when Tillerson said -

The Times noted that Tillerson said he didn’t meant to criticize the government, but that “it’s largely not a highly disciplined organization.”
- he should have added that there are good reasons for it not being that way. Not to mention, it reads as Tillerson essentially blaming others for his inability to do much -- in what is usually a very powerful position.

Trump hasn't hired the needed replacement since he took over. This administration isn't running with all the needed pieces. It is missing pieces of its guts. Hell, they didn't even have a hotel for the G20 because they couldn't even get the travel arrangements done right. That's just the travel arrangements!!
