President Trump Urges Loyalty as Boy Scouts Boo Barack Obama at Jamboree

Source: Daily Beast

President Trump asked more than 35,000 Scouts celebrating the organization’s Jamboree to uphold just a single Scout Law value: loyalty. Specifically, to him.

For more than a century, members of the Boy Scouts of America have sworn to uphold the values of Scout Law—the code of scouting chivalry that requires its adherents to be “trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent” to all they encounter.

On Monday evening, however, President Donald Trump used the backdrop of more than 35,000 Scouts celebrating the organization’s quadrennial Jamboree to fixate on just one value: loyalty. Specifically, how little he feels it in the nation’s capital.

“As the Scout Law says, a Scout is trustworthy, loyal,” Trump said, pausing dramatically. “We could use some more loyalty, I will tell you that.”

Over the course of a freewheeling 40-minute speech, the president complained numerous times about “fake news,” bragged about his Electoral College victory nine months ago, threatened to fire Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, and encouraged the assembled teens and pre-teens to boo President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

Trump is not a human being to be made an example to follow. He's a selfish vindictive meglamaniac who has never done a thing for any one. Only cares for himself. He would have been thrown out of the scouts. Here he is indoctrinating teens with his lies, teaching them to scorn others. He's becoming the most hated man in America

honestly, 2018 is the last stand

Not that they haven't been for decades now with republicans, but all the chips are on the table and the stakes are very clear.

The reason they are so far gone now is because they know this country is rolling over.

IF we don't completely rebuke republicans in 2018, if they get past that without losing congress and a lot of state governorships and legislatures, it will be the confirmation that they are bullet proof, and the results will be truly chilling.

Segregation

Levitt refused to integrate his developments. The Jewish Levitt barred Jews from Strathmore, his first pre-Levittown development on Long Island in New York, and he refused to sell his homes to blacks. His sales contracts also forbade the resale of properties to blacks through restrictive covenants, although in 1957 a white couple resold their house to the first black family to live in a Levitt home. Levitt's all-white policies also led to civil rights protests in Bowie, Maryland in 1963.[8][9] The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the American Civil Liberties Union opposed Levitt’s racist policies, and the Federal Housing Administration prepared to refuse mortgages on his next Levittown. Nevertheless, Levitt would not back down and continued planning another whites-only Levittown in Willingboro Township, New Jersey. He fought legal challenges in New Jersey courts until the United States Supreme Court refused to hear his case.[13]

The 2003 PBS series Race: The Power of an Illusion, by California Newsreel, features Levittown and nearby Roosevelt in documenting systemic racism in the development of the early suburbs.

Memories of Segregation in Levittown

By JULIA C. MEAD MAY 11, 2003

<...>

The last episode, ''The House We Live In,'' (ed. from ''Race: the Power of an Illusion,'' a PBS documentary) examines how those erroneous views have left some racial groups at an economic disadvantage, particularly in housing, while accruing visible benefits to whites, which the filmmakers call the ''unmarked race.'' This episode traces the legal, financial, and social values that have defined the racial divide, from European immigration in the early 20th century to the post-World War II housing boom, typified by Roosevelt and Levittown, in Nassau County.

<...>

Bernice and Eugene Burnett tried over the winter of 1949-50 to buy a house in Levittown, they tell the camera. Mr. Burnett was one of nearly a million black soldiers eligible for a federally guaranteed mortgage under the G.I. Bill of Rights, but precluded by housing discrimination from enjoying that benefit.

He recalls being impressed by the tract houses sprouting on a former potato field and a salesman's response to his inquiry about buying one: ''It's not me, but the owners of this development have not as yet decided to sell these homes to Negroes.''

The Levitt family never did decide to sell to blacks, and as a result, Levittown remains ''95 to 98 percent white,'' said John A. Juliano, a real estate broker. Interviewed by telephone, Mr. Juliano added: ''It wasn't just Levitt. The federal government condoned it, and it set a precedent there that's lasted a long time.''

Trump’s Boy Scouts speech broke with 80 years of presidential tradition

By Katie Mettler and Derek Hawkins July 25 at 7:17 AM

For 80 years, American presidents have been speaking to the National Scout Jamboree, a gathering of tens of thousands of youngsters from around the world eager to absorb the ideas of service, citizenship and global diplomacy.
....

For a brief moment at this year’s jamboree in West Virgina, President Donald Trump indicated that he would follow that tradition — sort of. ... “Who the hell wants to speak about politics when I’m in front of the Boy Scouts?” he said.

Then, standing before all 40,000 of them, he bragged about the “record” crowd size, bashed President Barack Obama, criticized the “fake media” and trashed Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. In the lengthy 35-minute speech, the president threatened to fire his health and human services secretary if he couldn’t persuade members of Congress to vote for the Republican health-care bill.

From ‘fake media’ to Clinton, Trump brings political attacks to the Scout Jamboree

By John Wagner and Jenna Johnson July 25 at 9:05 AM

Ahead of President Trump’s appearance Monday at the National Scout Jamboree in West Virginia, the troops were offered some advice on the gathering’s official blog: Fully hydrate. Be “courteous” and “kind.” And avoid the kind of divisive chants heard during the 2016 campaign such as “build the wall” and “lock her up.”

But from the moment he took the stage, Trump — who was never a Scout himself but touted his role as the “honorary president of the Boy Scouts of America” — started leading them down a very different path.

Over the next 35 minutes, the president threatened to fire one of his Cabinet members, attacked former president Barack Obama, dissed his former rival Hillary Clinton, marveled at the size of the crowd, warned the boys about the “fake media,” mocked pollsters and pundits, and said more people would say “Merry Christmas” under his presidency. He also told a rambling tale about a famous, now-deceased home builder that meandered from a Manhattan cocktail party to a yacht and then to places that the president would only allow the boys’ imaginations to go.

In response to a backlash following the speech, the Boy Scouts distanced itself Tuesday from Trump’s remarks. In a statement, the organization said it is “wholly non-partisan and does not promote any on position, product, service, political candidate or philosophy.” It added, without mentioning Trump’s name, that inviting “the sitting U.S. President” to visit the Jamboree is a long-standing tradition and “is in no way an endorsement of any political party or specific policies.”
