Trump calls for ban on transgender individuals in military
Source: The Hill
President Trump on Wednesday called for a ban on transgender people serving in the U.S. military.
Trump said in a series of tweets the military needs to be focused on "decisive and overwhelming" victory.
"After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow...Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military," Trump tweeted.
"Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming...victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you"

(37,648 posts)The military recently announced that the transgender thing in the military isn't working, and most particularly, the transgenders are at risk, and the military's costs associated with it...etc., etc.
So Trump is just piggybacking on what he perceives as already a popular position to take. He wants more adoration and "Hail to the Chief," as usual.

(26,044 posts)Very cute. Reminds me of the old days, when whites piously wondered just what "the coloreds" wanted.
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)I will try to adhere to it.
BTW, I remember the signs "whites only" and such. The term used at that time was "colored people" mainly.
Your likening the word "transgender" to "colored" is totally wrong, of course. Transgender IS the correct name. Colored is not (though it used to be).
We're not writing thesis papers here. This is a forum, and so we use casual writing. If it were a news article or college paper we would say "transgender people" and not take the shortcut. But this is a forum.
Please save your outrage for real discrimination.

(192 posts)So proper grammar precludes referring to a person as "a" transgender or homosexual. I know it's commonly misused, but that,
like the improper implementation of "begs the question" is still technically wrong.

I have no doubt that it reflects the views of Twitler and his inner circle whereas Pence has previously been outspoken in his views of LGBTQ people and their right breathe.
It is my view, and I am not alone in this, that they intend to reconvene the Inquisition and reboot the Final Solution, Mueller's efforts notwithstanding.

(6,017 posts)A 2016 study by the Rand Corporation found the maximum annual medical costs for transgender services would be around $8.4 million. By comparison, the military spent $84 million on erectile dysfunction medications Viagra and Cialis in 2014, the Military Times reported.

I am under the impression that Transgenders are a very very small minority, requiring a lot of medical attention. Maybe I am wrong. But I must admit that I had hardly heard of this particular gender before Bruce Jenner only a few years ago.
It may be helpful to know how many people we are getting upset about.
OldHippieChick
(2,434 posts)Inasmuch as the transgender portion of our population is supposed to be around .03% I doubt the 15,000 figure, but it may be the military is a good place to learn how to fit in.
As for the medical costs - we spend at least 100 times more on Viagra for the military. Yes, we do. Please be upset about that.

Richard Socarides, a longtime gay rights advocate who advised Bill Clinton on gay men and lesbians serving in uniform, called Trump's decision a tragic betrayal of all LGBT Americans and a shameful effort to win over social conservatives at the expense of the vulnerable.
But, what Trump will now learn: Don't mess with us, Socarides said. This gets him a fight he will not win.

As a candidate for president, one of Donald Trump most notable breaks from conservative orthodoxy was his on-the-record support for LGBT rights. At the Republican National Convention, Trump said hed do everything in my power to protect our LGBT citizens. That was after Peter Thiel became the first openly gay Republican to speak at the partys convention, and after Trump told the LGBT community that hed fight for them.
Wednesdays announcement that Trump would bar transgender people from the armed forces was the latest contradiction of that pledge. It couldnt have been clearer after casting himself as a pro-gay rights candidate, Trumps administration had already rescinded protections for trans students in public schools. After declaring himself a noncombatant in one of the culture wars, President Trump, with strong support from religious conservatives, has joined the battle with aplomb.
So far, that hasnt lost Trump any support from gay conservatives who argued that he was the gay rights candidate. Milo Yiannopoulos, the former Breitbart editor who co-hosted a Gays for Trump party at the RNC, said he was delighted that the president had made a smart and compassionate decision.
You dont help mentally ill trans people by sticking them on the front lines, Yiannopoulos said. You help them with therapy and drugs though not, I have to stress, transition surgery. I only wish hed gone further and banned women from combat units too, since the evidence clearly shows their presence is disastrous for both morale and performance. Baby steps?
