COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Barring a rare last-minute intervention, Akron child killer Ronald Phillips will be put to death Wednesday morning at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility near Lucasville.

Phillips was convicted of raping and beating to death 3-year-old Sheila Marie Evans, the daughter of his girlfriend, in 1993. Phillips, now 43, has evaded the executioner several times, most recently because of lawsuits challenging Ohio's lethal injection execution method.

He's scheduled to die at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the state's "death house" with a new three-drug lethal injection cocktail. If successful, the execution could clear the way for as many as 26 more in the next three years.

Phillips' execution would be Ohio's first since January 2014, when Dennis Maguire took an unusually long 26 minutes to die by a new combination of lethal injection drugs. Since then, state officials have struggled to obtain the drugs, revised the protocol and fought a lawsuit from death-row inmates.

Sheila Marie Evans' autopsy showed over 125 bruises, multiple vaginal and anal wounds and cardiovascular collapse. She died vomiting, bleeding and defecating herself after the severe traumatic beating and prolonged rape she took.

This also was not the first time this shit of a human being sodomized this baby.

He was also not the only one that abused her. The mother got 13-30 for manslaughter and died in prison.

This is pretty much where I split from progressives.

Some people just need to be put to death. I won't shed one tear for this fucker.

The appeals process and maintaining a death row are incredibly expensive. I think it's better to just lock them up and throw away the key. Life for child rapist/murderers isn't too pleasant in prison.

they line up these stupid appeals to drag it out. DP should be reserved for cases with ZERO doubt of guilt. 1 yr for any other appeals and off with them.

He's a child murderer. Do you have any idea how many men behind bars are fathers? They don't like child molesters, or murderers. Keeping him alive and in GenPop would be the worst punishment anyone could devise.

13. When one thinks about it, death actually IS the humane solution in this case.

It saves the prisoner from torture, rape and assault.

It saves the prisoner from mentally having to relive why he got there, which drives some to suicide.

Dragging the appeals process out in a costly manner is the only drawback I can see.

14. The best thing ever done regarding the DP was in France

When the rest of the world was going to lethal injection, France retained the guillotine. Their logic was, only in the most extreme crimes could you convince 12 good men and women to send someone to have his head cut off. It worked, too...for many years no one was rotten enough to deserve beheading.

I think they'd find it in their hearts to make an exception for Ronald Phillips.

(Reuters) - Ohio put to death on Wednesday a 43-year-old man convicted of raping and killing a three-year-old child in what was the state's first execution in more than three years after a lengthy legal dispute over the choice of lethal injection drugs.

Ronald Phillips was pronounced dead at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville at 10:43 a.m. EDT (1443 GMT), the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction said in a statement.

The execution had been delayed multiple times as a court fight played out over the state's use of a drug mixture for lethal injections. The U.S. Supreme Court denied appeals from Phillips late on Tuesday.

Phillips in January 1993 was dating Fae Evans, the mother of three-year-old Sheila Marie Evans, when she left her daughter with Phillips in her apartment, according to court documents.
