US hits Nicols Maduro with sanctions after Venezuela's 'sham' election
Source: The Guardian
The US government has imposed financial sanctions on Venezuelas president, Nicolás Maduro, after the election of a new legislative body to redraft the countrys constitution in a vote described by Washington as a sham.
Maduro hailed Sundays election as a popular mandate to dramatically recast the troubled state, but his political opponents have warned this could lead to the dissolution of existing powers and turn the country into a fully fledged dictatorship.
The sanctions unveiled on Monday freeze any of Maduros assets under US jurisdiction, and prohibit US citizens from doing business with the beleaguered president.
Acording to Reuters, the US is also considering further sanctions against Venezuelas oil industry, which could prove devastating for a country which is already in a state of economic free fall.

(4,033 posts)How is what is going on in Venezuala, different from what Trump is doing in the White House?
Trump is inventing a new legislative body to rewrite the Constitution so he can hold on to power forever??
That's news to me.

(4,033 posts)He is trying to destroy democratic elections. He cares only about enriching himself. And he already has a legislative body who is allowing him to get away with it. (And if the commission he set up to 'investigate' all of those illegal voters who voted so that Hillary won the popular vote will do its best to change the laws so that only Trump voters are allowed to vote. He doesn't need to rewrite the Constitution, he can just ignore it.)
