Florida Governor Rick Scott Declares State Of Emergency (in response to Hurricane Irma)
Source: WKRG
By Olivia Stump
MOBILE, Alabama (WKRG) Governor Rick Scott is declaring a state of emergency for the state of Florida in response to Hurricane Irma.
Governor Scott said, Hurricane Irma is a major and life-threatening storm and Florida must be prepared. I have continued to be briefed by the Florida Division of Emergency Management on Hurricane Irma and current forecast models have Florida in Irmas path potentially impacting millions of Floridians. Today, given these forecasts and the intensity of this storm, I have declared a state of emergency for every county in Florida to make certain that state, federal and local governments are able to work together and make sure resources are dispersed to local communities as we get prepared for this storm. In Florida, we always prepare for the worst and hope for the best and while the exact path of Irma is not absolutely known at this time, we cannot afford to not be prepared. This state of emergency allows our emergency management officials to act swiftly in the best interest of Floridians without the burden of bureaucracy or red tape.
In Florida, we know that the best way to protect our families in severe weather is to have a plan. I urge all Floridians to remain vigilant and stay alert to local weather and news and visit FLGetAPlan.com today as we all prepare for Hurricane Irma. We will keep monitoring and issuing updates on Hurricane Irma as it approaches Florida.

(7,153 posts)MONROE COUNTY TO ACTIVATE EMERGENCY OPERATION CENTER AT NOON TUESDAY FOR HURRICANE IRMA
MONROE COUNTY, FL With the entire Florida Keys in the National Weather Services five-day forecast error cone, the Monroe County Emergency Operation Center (EOC) will activate at noon Tuesday.
In a 6:30 p.m. briefing Monday night, meteorologist Jon Rizzo with the National Weather Service Key West told emergency managers in the Keys there is a high confidence for a major hurricane nearing south Florida, the Keys, Florida Straits and/or Cuba by Saturday. The earliest reasonable arrival time of tropical storm-force winds in the Keys is midday Friday.
It is too early to discuss exact storm surge, wind and other possible impacts to the Keys.
If the storm track continues toward the Florida Keys, Monroe County could issue a mandatory tourist evacuation for Wednesday morning and a resident evacuation for Thursday morning. Tourist and residents should pay close attention to the forecast and official advisories. Those decisions will be made by County officials in the next day or two.
We recognize this is a very dangerous storm, Monroe County Mayor George Neugent said. We are taking it seriously and closely monitoring the track. All our tourists and residents should do the same.
Monroe County Emergency Management will discuss shelters on Tuesday. If there is a mandatory evacuation for residents, it will be too dangerous to open shelters in the Keys. Monroe County residents can seek shelter at the Miami-Dade County Fair & Expositions E Darwin Puchs Pavilion. More information will become available if the shelter is needed.

I guess the good little Christians will blame or thank their God (which one depends on their mood it seems). And I suppose the blue state ( CA) will get zero Fed Relief for obvious reasons.

(22,651 posts)reinstall all the wildlife removed from those burned out lands over the past 100 years.
The wildlife HEAL the lands. The open grasses and trees hold the soil/and water- the wildlife add manure and their bodies to fertilize everything.
100 years ago millions of wildlife including beautiful wild horses lived on those wildfire burned lands and at that time, 100 years ago those lands were pristine, lush and healthy.

(4,266 posts)I'm disabled, so I ultimately have to either go with the folks (who I still live with) or take my chances. I know my mom wants to pack up the RV and go, but dad thinks it's too soon and we need a better idea of the forecast track.
This comes at a really bad time for me. I'm under treatment with the University of Miami health system, my last doctor moved out, they reassigned me to one at a branch much closer to home, and my first appointment is supposed to be on Thursday. Cutting it close, but if I don't go, I'll have no refills on my meds. Argh.

(4,266 posts)The people I'd have needed to talk to weren't there today due to Labor Day.
It's tough to say whether they'd help me or not if I can't get in sooner than Thursday. I've been treated within the UoMIami system for 10+ years, but I've never seen this particular doctor before. It was to be the first visit. When you add in that one drug is a controlled substance... Dunno. I'd be in a really, really bad situation if I ran out without weaning, though.
I guess I'll have to hope there's enough time for me to go, and if we need to, for us to then get the heck out.

(21,646 posts)to close . No need to question what would happen if I cancel since the doctor wouldn't be there due to weather coming.
Mine did not include meds though . It was just a long wait for an spot with a specialist
Call very early and hope you get meds and keep an eye on weather tracking
Good luck

(4,266 posts)I have never seen this particular doctor before, was reassigned to her due to my prior doctor leaving the university. Between never having seen her and one of my meds being a controlled substance (I am in pain mgmt), she may not want to or may not be able to provide refills without seeing me.
Could not reach anyone today due to Labor Day. Will have to try tomorrow.

TX has some sensible coastal building codes - in the 1990's FL had zippo.
When I moved to FL in the mid-nineties I was invited to a party on the beach.
I walked out the beach-side door and the high water line was 50 feet away - I was shocked - and my first thought was "this place will be toast if a real hurricane hits".
I was in Antarctica when Hurricane Opal hit Pensacola - we flew over Pensacola Beach when we returned - saw empty lots after empty lots.
The house I partied at was gone - not even the slab remained.
