Trump administration announces end of immigration protection program for dreamers

Source: The Washington Post

By David Nakamura September 5 at 11:03 AM

The Trump administration announced Tuesday it would begin to unwind an Obama-era program that allows younger undocumented immigrants to live in the country without fear of deportation, calling the program unconstitutional but offering a partial delay to give Congress a chance to address the issue.

The decision, after weeks of intense deliberation between President Trump and his top advisers, represents a blow to hundreds of thousands of immigrants known as "dreamers" who have lived in the country illegally since they were children. But it also allows the White House to shift some of the pressure and burden of determining their future, setting up a public fight over their legal status that is likely to drag on for months.

The Department of Homeland Security said it would no longer accept new applications for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which has provided renewable, two-year work permits to nearly 800,000 dreamers. The agency said those currently enrolled in DACA will be able to continue working until their permits expire; those whose permits expire by March 5, 2018, will be permitted to apply for two-year renewals as long as they do so by Oct. 5.

New applications and renewal requests already received by DHS before Tuesday will be reviewed and validated on a case-by-case basis, even those for permits that expire after March 5, officials said.

Sessions says DACA ‘being rescinded’ with window for Congress to act

By NOLAN D. MCCASKILL 09/05/2017 10:57 AM EDT

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced Tuesday that President Donald Trump's administration is rescinding an Obama-era policy that provided work permits to undocumented immigrants who were brought into the country as children, with a wind-down period that allows Congress to act on the issue first.

"I'm here today to announce that the program known as DACA that was effectuated under the Obama administration is being rescinded," Sessions told reporters.

"The nation must set and enforce a limit on how many immigrants we admit each year, and that means all cannot be accepted," he added. "This does not mean they are bad people or that our nation disrespects or demeans them in any way. It means we are properly enforcing our laws as Congress has passed them."

I've heard more than one person suggest that Trump's xenophobia will ultimately do to the national Republican Party what Prop 187 and Pete Wilson did to the California GOP. That's obviously not going to happen in states like AL, MS, and a lot of the Rust Belt, but it could be the difference in states like Florida, Arizona, and maybe even Texas. And that doesn't take into account states that are becoming more and more blue, like NV, CO, and NM.

they'll get documented people who lost their documents in the hurricane flooding. They've been rounding up and deporting a lot of good people who have jobs, pay taxes, get good grades in school, contribute to society, and die rescuing people in the floods without ever having committed any crime. Just because their parents wanted them to have a better life.

But they'll do precisely jack shit about white supremacists and other domestic terrorists

They are actively white washing our country while knowing fully well that we have never been a white country and have always had some level of diversity. The few black and brown Trumpers are going to be in a for a big shock.

How will these young kids be distinguished between the children born in another country and brought here or a child born to "illegal" parents here in the US. The 14th amendment gives this protection.....

coming from Parliament Hill in Ottawa. We were just able to cope with the influx of of refugees that poured across the border hoping to avoid deportation from the US last winter and spring . Trump's sadistic decision kill DACA could make this problem worse than anyone could have imagined.

I can only hope, along with 800K Dreamers, that congress can manage to get their act together long enough to pass legislation allowing the Dreamers to stay in the US. Creating 800k more people at least some of whom are so desperate they are willing to risk their lives crossing the border to Canada on foot through farmers' fields in the middle of winter is an unnecessary and devastatingly cruel act.
