The House on Friday cleared a short-term measure to avoid a government shutdown and raise the debt limit through December, ratifying a deal President Trump struck with Democrats.
Lawmakers voted 316-90 for the package that includes more than $15 billion in disaster recovery aid for communities affected by Hurricane Harvey. The majority of House Republicans voted for the bill, something that had been uncertain, but more of the yes votes came from Democrats.
Ninety lawmakers voted against the bill, all of them Republicans.
The House voted earlier in the week to approve a standalone measure to provide federal assistance for Harvey relief in an overwhelming 419-3 vote. But many conservatives balked at the final bill, which became a three-month extension of the debt ceiling with no spending reforms.

House votes to send $15.3 billion Harvey aid package to Trump; funds government through Dec. 8

The House on Friday overwhelmingly approved a $15.25 billion disaster aid package despite strong objections from conservatives who oppose including an agreement struck by President Trump and congressional Democrats to raise the federal borrowing limit and keep the government open until Dec. 8.
The measure passed by a vote of 316-90.
Democrats were expected to deliver a majority of the votes to approve the deal, making it easier for Republicans to vote against the package without the threat of failing to provide critical disaster funding as Hurricane Irma bears down on Floridas southern coast.
The legislation easily passed the Senate by a vote of 80-17 on Thursday, despite similar concerns from Senate conservatives.
House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) was among those Republicans who initially opposed the idea of a three-month extension of the federal borrowing limit but he said Thursday that he supports the legislation. Ryan said he worries about the impact of continued reliance on short-term debt limit fixes on credit markets but the package Trump agreed to is intended to create certainty while the United States responds to a number of natural disasters.

(129,612 posts)They will have to come up with some type of omnibus funding bill for FY18 or extend the CR for another short term period (or the government will shut down) and would also need to decide whether to ditch the debt ceiling or not. I expect most of the Democrats in the House would vote to eliminate the debt ceiling and possibly get enough Republicans to go along to get to 218 (they need about 25 or so). The Senate might be trickier due to the fiscal hawks in there (like Flake).
