SEATTLE (AP) An extensive poaching ring is responsible for slaughtering more than 100 black bears, cougars, bobcats, deer and elk in southwestern Washington state and northwestern Oregon, with many of the animals hunted with dogs and then left to rot, authorities said Friday.
"There was an absolute wanton disregard for our conservations laws," Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Capt. Jeff Wickersham said.
Seven people six adults, some of whom have previously been targeted in poaching investigations, and one juvenile have been charged so far, but investigators plan to recommend charges against more people, he said. Some face upward of 60 counts related to illegal hunting and wasting animals.
The investigation was reported this week by The Chronicle newspaper of Centralia, which said it had obtained hundreds of pages of case reports from the department through a public records request.

(32,080 posts)bear gall bladders and other parts to be sent to China for their so-called "traditional medicine" crap. But, yeah. This is just killing for the sake of killing. These guys have way bigger issues than law-breaking. I don't think that even the prison time they will hopefully get will cure them.

Y'know, though, the dump maladministration's action to allow wanton shooting of hibernating bears is just as egregious. The hideous people who will shoot those bears are no better than these cretins.

Members of a prolific local wildlife poaching ring often treated their sordid endeavors as a familial bonding experience of sorts. Fathers and sons shared credit for illegal kills. Boyfriends brought their girlfriends along and showed them how to kill big game out of season and with the illegal help of hunting hounds.
In a number of cases, juvenile relatives were even brought along into the backwoods and allowed to not only observe, but take part in the unfettered, unethical killings of deer, elk, black bears, bobcats and cougars.
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife recently wrapped up the first leg of its investigation into the poaching and recommended seven people for more than 200 charges to the Skamania County prosecutor. It is unclear how many of those charges and suspects will wind up being prosecuted in court, but the mountain of evidence compiled by the WDFW is staggering. The WDFW says it has identified more than 10 suspects in total and expects additional charges to emerge from their cases as time goes on. For now though, the focus is on bringing justice to the most avid participants in the poaching activities that the WDFW says occurred between August 2015 and February 2017.
So far, at least 35 documented poaching trips have been submitted as evidence to support charges against the suspected poachers. In all, law enforcement officials believe the affiliated group of poachers could be responsible for the illegal killing of more than 100 animals, many of which were left behind to rot either fully intact or with just their trophy parts removed. The individuals facing charges at this time include Joseph Dills, 30, of Longview; Eddy Dills, 57, of Longview; William Haynes, 23, of Longview; Erik Christian Martin, 23, of Longview; and Bryan C. Tretiak, 31, of Morton. Aubri (Larsen) McKenna, 35, of Longview, and Sierra Dills, 17, of Longview, have also been referred for misdemeanor charges in Skamania County.

(160,527 posts)Suspects involved in a massive poaching ring in southwestern Washington and north central Oregon are officially charged.
Two of them are a father and son pair well-known in hunting circles.
. . .
>Multiple videos seized
showed the suspects encouraging their dogs to tear bears apart after shooting them from tree tops.
. . .
Joe Dills was investigated in 2007 and charged in 2008 for his participation in the prolific poaching group, the self-avowed "Kill 'Em All Boyz." According to his case file, Dills hunted beside Micky Gordon, a man who bragged about illegally killing bears among other wildlife and even lethally punished one his hound dogs by wrapping an electrical collar to his testicles, shocking him so severely the dog later died of his injuries.
Eddy Dills, Joe Dills' dad, hunted on nearly two-dozen state issued permits in 2011 to kill bears on timber farms, as part of the WDFW Bear Timber Depredation Management (BTDM) program. It's a program that depends on hunter ethics, entrusted behind locked gates on private land to follow the rules.
. . .
However, in >a year-long investigation
, KING 5 learned BTDM hunters who are caught breaking the rules are rarely held accountable by the state due to fractured and inconsistent policy driven by pressure from big timber. Hunters involved with the program told KING 5 there is often pressure to kill whatever bears are in the area rather than targeting problem animals.
