U2 Cancels St. Louis Concert Amid Protests Over Police Officers Acquittal On Murder Charge

Source: Washington Post

By Ellen McCarthy September 16 at 11:55 AM

U2 has canceled a planned concert for Saturday night in St. Louis, where crowds have been protesting the acquittal of a former city police officer who had been charged with murder in the shooting death of a black driver.

In a statement Saturday morning, the Irish rock band and entertainment company LiveNation said they had been “informed by the St. Louis Police Department that they are not in a position to provide the standard protection for our audience as would be expected for an event of this size.”

“In light of this information,” the statement continued, “we cannot in good conscience risk our fans’ safety by proceeding with tonight’s concert. As much as we regret having to cancel, we feel it is the only acceptable course of action in the current environment.”

Based on comments on STLToday (the St. Louis Post Dispatch website), many people are saying "thanks BLM". I have never worked security, so perhaps I am being careless (?). But I have been to concerts (in the city back in the day!) and I don't recall much of a police presence. Maybe for directing traffic?

To me, it just seems like "let's give into fear", which is what the police seem to be doing with all of these killings.

Yesterday, they sent many people who work downtown home early, including my son-in-law who works at a garage and they had no business anyway. I am seeing issues with traffic, but I am also seeing people calling this a "riot" and I am not seeing that.

I honestly think if I had tickets to see the U2 show, I would feel just as safe as any other time to go up to the city (I live about 20 miles from the city limit). I would expect traffic to be maybe worse than usual, but I would have expected traffic delays anyway.

To me, it really seems like U2 was saying, yeah, the protesters are a danger, but as far as I can see they are not and they have a right to be out there in the streets. Yes, I have heard the mayor's house was vandalized. I would assume that is where the cops should be. Not blocking the protesters in the streets as I have seen that is mostly what they are doing. And yes, some cops were injured. But not shot, so it's hard to say that is worse than what so many "suspects" have had happen to them.

Fear, and listening to fear is never a good thing. The protesters are tired of being afraid and are trying to say "stop". No one should live their lives based on being afraid (outside of common sense!). Saying "we better not go to this concert" is like giving in to fear. And I really don't think it is the protesters that the people should be fearing.

If someone gets hurt and then it becomes known they went ahead with the concert after being told there wouldn't be police protection...come on. Lawsuits out the ass.

to anyone who wants them, but go ahead with the concert. That way the people that are fearful can stay home without losing their money and the ones who want to attend can. I can't imagine the band was in fear of violence themselves. They could have even turned it into a benefit and raised money for the ACLU and the SPLC.

a mall in St. Louis county, I can understand how affecting people, and especially commerce is the best way to get people to listen. It is not supposed to be easy.
Maybe I just wish that U2 had stated the reason differently somehow. Mentioned something more about the protests being peaceful and not just because the cops would be unable to provide security.

Shutting things down is uncomfortable for those who hear the message, but it is also the way to get those who can't seem to get the protesters message to maybe really see how being uncomfortable can be.

money to see U2. I travelled over 660 miles to see them and will have 660 miles to get home. People still had to eat and buy gas in stupid St. Louis
The problem is the cops didn't want Bono to say bad things about them and show support for protesters. The protests are over 20 miles from site of the concert. Downtown town St. Louis was almost deserted at 6:30 PM. Many ushers and Dome security people hanging around to turn away concert goers. They will still get paid.
Too bad U2 didn't move the concert across the river to Illinois.
Missouri hates people of color and St. Louis has turned my stomach. I will try never to spend a dime here again.
End of rant.

Don't forget they were in Paris the night the Bataclan massacre took place.

If the police can't protect the crowd then the show must not go on.

how great it would be if police stopped murdering people and getting away with it.

you cannot continue to perpetrate injustice and expect the people not to rise.

my heart is with the protesters. haven't they had enough? haven't we all?

Right up next to the stage. It was truly spectacular. I've never seen any video production with as much drama.

That being said, I feel sorry for the fans in St Louis, but I know that U2 made the right decision. You can't leave a crowd that size (it was 70,000 in Minneapolis) without proper protection.
