McMaster: Travel ban is 'a first step'

Source: The Hill

BY MALLORY SHELBOURNE - 09/17/17 09:32 AM EDT

National security advisor H.R. McMaster said Sunday that President Trump’s travel ban is “a first step” toward better screening of individuals entering the United States.

“Well if you can’t screen people effectively to know who’s coming into your country, then you shouldn’t allow people from that country to travel,” McMaster told ABC’s “This Week.”

“So what the travel ban is is a first step, a first step in better screening, a first step in better sharing of information.”

McMaster’s comments come after the Supreme Court last week agreed to lift restrictions on the ban. The temporary stay issued by the highest court allows the Trump administration to continue banning most refugees from entering the United States. “Well, as I’ve said, what he’s meaning to communicate is that we look at these organizations everyday," the McMaster said on Sunday. We try to map these organizations everyday.”

McMaster dodges on Bannon question: Administration better off when we 'can serve the president'

BY REBECCA SAVRANSKY - 09/17/17 09:36 AM EDT

National security adviser H.R. McMaster on Sunday dodged a question about whether the Trump administration is better off without former chief strategist Stephen Bannon.

"The administration is better off when we can serve the president by integrating and coordinating across all of our departments and agencies with our key allies and partners," McMaster said on "Fox News Sunday." "And present the president with multiple options and then based on his decisions, to help the president implement these policies that prioritize protecting and advancing the interests of the American people."

McMaster said it's important to have an inclusive process and not to try to "manipulate into a particular decision or to advance your own agenda."

"We're advancing the president's agenda and we're advancing policies and strategies that are for the American people," he said.

Too many military in positions of power may lead them to see a present as primarily commander-in-chief and not head of our civilian government.
