Todd Akin wins Missouri Republican US Senate primary
Source: AP
"Akin on Tuesday topped businessman John Brunner and former state Treasurer Sarah Steelman in a primary in which all three leading candidates portrayed themselves as the top conservative choice.
McCaskill was unopposed in the Democratic primary.
The 65-year-old Akin first won election to a suburban St. Louis seat in the U.S. House in 2000 after narrowly prevailing in a five-way Republican primary. He campaigned for Senate by highlighting that he was once ranked as the most conservative member of Missouri's congressional delegation.
Akin may have also gained some support from McCaskill, who ran a TV ad focused on Akin's conservative credentials while concluding he is too conservative."

(1,548 posts)on the bright side,Palin was in the show-me campaigning for Sarah Steelman. Its good to see mama grizzly wasted her time and, well, whatever.
Atkin was least publized of senate candiates.Claire running ads against him suggest she wanted to run against him. It's going to be
tough for her anyway. If people think they can get someone more liberal than her elected In Missouri they are fooling themselves.
I defently haven't always agreed with her but at least with her on many causes she will vote with democrats. And she did vote for
health care reform.

(34,857 posts)All beat McCaskill, but by varying degrees.
Brunner held an average lead of 5, Steelman 4.6 and Akin only 3.
So, there's that.

(34,857 posts)He's going to lose the state, but he might bring enough of the urban dwelling voters out (KC, St. Louis area) to push her over the top.

(38,958 posts)Brunner was my biggest concern as he was loaning his own money to the campaign. I believe he loaned himself some $3 Million so far (which begs all sorts of questions - why would one spend that much of their own money for a job that pays... what?). He also had a bunch of slick mailings & TV ads.
