Trump aides urged him to cancel Puerto Rico trip over fears of protests: report

Source: The Hill

BY MAX GREENWOOD - 10/03/17 11:01 AM EDT

Aides to President Trump urged him to delay his trip to storm-ravaged Puerto Rico over fears that protests against his administration's response to Hurricane Maria could trigger a fiery response from the president, according to a New York Times report.

Trump is set to travel to Puerto Rico on Tuesday to survey the damage wrought by Hurricane Maria. He has faced scrutiny from local officials and others who say his administration was slow to respond to the storm.

Trump defended the relief efforts over the weekend in a series of tweets that accused people in Puerto Rico of relying too heavily on the federal government for aid and not doing enough to help themselves.

Those comments came after Carmen Yulín Cruz, the mayor of Puerto Rico's capital city, ripped Acting Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke for saying that the Trump administration's recovery efforts on the island made a "good news story."

be the audience he faces when he arrives in PR. He can't risk having protesters - protesting him.

I don't think he'll have a teleprompter or a prepared speech either. It will be interesting to see him go off-script and say some stupid stuff.

In fact, the current Governor is the son of a former Governor who is a leader of PR's flying monkey brigade. The former Governor is allied with the GOP, his son is supposedly allied with the Dems. The last time the senior Rosello ran, (2009 if I remember correctly) he ran on the Gop's culture issues (anti-choice, anti-gay marriage, lower taxes, etc.). He lost and returned to his home in NY.

of them getting on the plane. Don't we usually see Melania's fashion show before the flight and the clothing change when they arrive.

The aides are less concerned about the protests themselves and more about a possible unhinged response by the president. They are afraid the Trump will once again do something stupid.
