WHITE AMERICA? TRUMP PRAISES 'ARRIVAL OF EUROPEANS' IN COLUMBUS DAY MESSAGE, DOESN'T MENTION NATIVE AMERICANS WHO WERE SLAUGHTERED
BY HARRIET SINCLAIR ON 10/8/17 AT 12:47 PM
President Donald Trumps Columbus Day message is a little different from that of his predecessor, with the Republican opting to leave out any mention of Native Americans.
In a Columbus Day message released on Friday that proclaims Monday as the day the U.S. will celebrate the discovery of the Americas, Trump made no metion of the people who suffered as a result of the discovery.
Five hundred and twenty-five years ago, Christopher Columbus completed an ambitious and daring voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas. The voyage was a remarkable and then-unparalleled feat that helped launch the age of exploration and discovery, Trumps message said.
The permanent arrival of Europeans to the Americas was a transformative event that undeniably and fundamentally changed the course of human history and set the stage for the development of our great Nation. Therefore, on Columbus Day, we honor the skilled navigator and man of faith, whose courageous feat brought together continents and has inspired countless others to pursue their dreams and convictions, even in the face of extreme doubt and tremendous adversity, he added.

(12,585 posts)I thought he was looking for a shorter trade route to India, hence the designation of native people as "Indians."
I think the point about the annihilation of indigenous people as Europeans moved westward is something to be acknowledged.

(9,982 posts)He never set foot in North America. He most likely landed in the Bahamas and then went back to Spain. On a second trip, he explored Cuba and other islands in the Carribean. With the fair6 takes we call history in this country, school children are not told that he and the Spanish colonizers killed many natives, took as much gold as they could steal, and enslaved hundreds of natives, shipping many of them to Spain. He eventually went back to Spain, but he had nothing to do with the discovery of what is now the United States. We need to get rid of this holiday and instead declare the first Tuesday in November a federal holiday so people can vote.

(51,590 posts)the "current" facts about Columbus. I am surprised he even knows that Washington was a president and not just the name of a state. People give him too much credit. Tillerson is right...he IS a fucking moron.

(21,106 posts)no one "celebrating" this day will mention that Columbus and his men were pedophiles and mass murderers.
Man of faith, my ass. He was as despicable a human as one can imagine. It is such a horrible thing that we "celebrate" this so-called national holiday.
