Mass evacuations in Napa and Sonoma counties as wildfires spread
Source: sfgate.com
Several wildfires were burning out of control in Napa and Sonoma counties early Monday morning, prompting evacuations of neighborhoods and at least one Wine Country resort as firefighters sought to halt the advance of the infernos amid high winds.
Images of flames racing across fields and freeways and skies filling with embers and ash emerged as the National Weather Service said the blazes which caused power outages and blanketed much of the Bay Area in smoke were fanned by strong and dry northeast winds.
There was no immediate information on potential damage and injuries, but structures were burning in both counties, according to authorities and witnesses.
Cal Fire, the state agency, said the Atlas Fire in Napa County was near Atlas Peak Road and had blackened at least 200 acres. The area is northeast of the city of Napa and the Silverado Trail.

Atlas fire means Napa Valley.
Silverado Country Club, which just hosted the PGA Safeway Open this weekend, has been evacuated. 40 mph wind gusts from the north are pushing smoke south to San Francisco and the rest of the Bay Area. Northern parts of the city of Napa are under advisory evacuations. Unverified reports are that wineries may be burning in the Atlas Peak/Soda Canyon areas.
Second fire is burning northwest of Calistoga, which is the last large city in northern Napa Valley.
There is a third fire burning in the Mayacamas foothills, about halfway between the cities of Sonoma and Napa.
No links for my addendum -- this has come from multiple reports: KTVU in Oakland, CalFire, and the Napa County Sheriff's office.

(31,408 posts)They are leaving for Europe today. I can't imagine how stressful it will be for them if the fires are not contained soon.

Despite the dangerous Republican lies about reality. Keep America and your family safe. Take sensible action to respond to the reality that climate extremes are with us, and are going to stay with us. We need national policies to reckon with this.

(17,149 posts)I'd also left the windows open last night. I hope the wind dies down and they can get a handle on these fires.

(10,419 posts)I was talking with my sister back East and saying that fall was here because I could smell the wood-burning fireplaces. At 5am. Duh.
We're 20 miles from Napa.

(15,696 posts)My husband called this morning (I'm in TX this week) to say that our Richmond District neighborhood was smoky, not foggy. Poor Oaklnd is getting the blowing smoke now. KRON 4 called it a firestorm.

The winds have died down somewhat from the overnight hours, but are still shifting directions complicating response efforts.
