Story highlights

The comment came during an interview on Fox News Radio
"I write letters and I also call," Trump said of himself

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump, in defense of his claim that President Barack Obama didn't call the loved ones of fallen soldiers, floated the idea Tuesday that reporters ask his chief of staff, retired Gen. John Kelly, whether Obama called him after his son died in Afghanistan.

"As far as other presidents, I don't know, you could ask Gen. Kelly, did he get a call from Obama? I don't know what Obama's policy was," Trump said.................................

In the first year of Obama's term, 466 American troops died in Iraq and Afghanistan, compared to 25 this year. A spokesman for Obama declined a CNN request for comment about Trump's remarks.

Kelly and his wife, Karen Hernest Kelly, attended a 2011 Memorial Day breakfast for Gold Star families, those men and women whose children were killed in action, according to an aide, speaking on background..............................

with the president. But that is insufficient?

I wonder if Kelly knows his boss is dragging his son's memory into this petty shit? When is enough enough?

History will not be kind to anyone who did not speak truth to power during these dark days.

It was the highest death toll in the then 10 year war. Unrealistic to expect any president to personally call each family. The dinner was a reasonable alternative to honor the fallen soldiers and their families.

President Obama would have personally called the widow and not the father of the slain solider. Here is some more on this https://www.rawstory.com/2017/10/john-kelly-and-his-wife-sat-with-michelle-obama-at-gold-star-family-gathering-after-sons-death/

Second Lt. Robert Kelly was killed at age 29 while leading a platoon in Afghanistan in November 2010, and his father delivered a speech four days later about military sacrifices and the troops’ growing isolation from society.

His father has largely avoided speaking publicly about his family’s loss since then, and asked the Marine Corps officer who introduced him ahead of that impassioned speech not to mention his son.

“We are only one of 5,500 American families who have suffered the loss of a child in this war,” Kelly told the Washington Post six years ago. “The death of my boy simply cannot be made to seem any more tragic than the others.”
