Trump plans to release JFK assassination documents despite concerns from federal agencies

Source: Washington Post

By Ian Shapira October 21 at 9:20 AM

President Trump announced Saturday morning that he planned to release the tens of thousands of never-before-seen documents left in the files related to President John F. Kennedys assassination held by the National Archives and Records Administration.

Subject to the receipt of further information, I will be allowing, as President, the long blocked and classified JFK FILES to be opened, Trump tweeted early Saturday.

Kennedy assassination experts have been speculating for weeks about whether Trump would disclose the documents. The 1992 Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act required that the millions of pages many of them contained in CIA and FBI documents be published in 25 years, by Oct. 26. Over the years, the National Archives has released most of the documents, either in full or partially redacted.

But one final batch remains and only the president has the authority to extend the papers secrecy past the October deadline. In his tweet, Trump seemed to strongly imply he was going to release all the remaining documents. But he also hedged, suggesting that if between now and Oct. 26, other government agencies made a strong case not to release the documents, he wouldnt. Also, Trump was not clear about whether he would publish all of the documents in full, or with some of them redacted.

It's insane that his "official" statements ARE tweets at this point.

I guess this is why that bot is out there to do this for "normal" people -

This was decided over 20 years ago. The only decision he can make is to block it. He just wants credit with his conspiracy theorists and a small distraction.

One of the big reasons Drumpf got more minions to vote for him is that he accused Ted Cruz's dad, Rafael, of being involved in the JFK assassination. If Rafael is not involved, then this is ANOTHER major lie by Drumpf again. This is NOT as jocular as it may sound, for accusing someone of murdering a president falsely should be major grounds for impeachment.

which means some of the powers that be were either involved or would just be embarrassed by what's in the documents.

Kind of like covering up Nixon's meddling in the Paris Peace Talks, Iran-Contra, stopping the Florida recount in 2000, or just how far the Russian interference in last year's election went.

I didn't think there was any "unless the president decides otherwise" clause. Any effort by Trump would only be to block the release. He's not being magnanimous in "releasing" the documents, he's saving himself a lawsuit to stop his illegal actions if he tried to block the release, which would cause people to ask, "What does he not want us to know?"

I think over the years, the argument has been not wanting to declassify certain documents for whatever reason.
