The Latest: Turnout up in Virginia's closely watched race

Source: Associated Press

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The Latest on the races for governor in Virginia and New Jersey (all times local):

2:55 p.m.

Early voter numbers are up in Virginia's closely watched race for governor while polling places around the state are reporting a steady turnout.

Department of Elections Commissioner Edgardo Cortes says Virginia had a "substantially higher" number of early voters in this year's closely watched race for governor than in recent past gubernatorial contests.

The 180,000 absentee ballots returned as of Sunday were 60,000 more than all absentee votes cast in the 2013 gubernatorial election.

Generally speaking, Democrats tend to do better in Virginia with a greater turnout.

This is what we see in election after election. The Democrat has a small lead that has shrunken in the last 10 days to 2 weeks of the campaign. Then we are told that turn out is high which would indicate a good chance of a win. Ultimately we are told that when late votes are counted the Democrat has lost another close election. Do we really believe that the same pattern happens over and over again or is somebody playing games with all our elections. On top of that why does the Democratic party never seem to challenge the results that follow this pattern?

The "enthusiasm" voters tend to turn out early, which often portends a democratic victory in these kinds of states. But then the GOP "base" that votes in every election "catches up" during the day. I care less about how many ballots are voted, than I do WHERE they are voted. In certain areas, the odds are better. In other, they tend to work against us.

Democrats need a double-digit lead to overcome all that bullshit.

There was a steady stream of voters at 3:30, and the rain is just stopping, so I hope many more people will be persuaded to go the polls.

We No. Virginians are what's keeping our state blue! I hope we don't disappoint today!

Hoping to HELL in one year we'll have a Dem back in as Governor of Kansas. Yes,for some strange reason we can elect Dems as Governor and many time women Gov that are Dems.
