Moore on sexual misconduct allegations: 'Why now?'

Source: The Hill

BY MAX GREENWOOD - 11/11/17 11:51 AM EST

Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore on Saturday once again denied allegations that he pursued sexual relations with a 14-year-old girl when he was in his 30s, questioning the timing of a Washington Post report detailing the account.

In his first public appearance since the allegations surfaced on Thursday, Moore suggested that the allegations were politically motivated – part of a smear campaign to damage him in the run up to the December special election in Alabama.

"I have not been guilty of sexual misconduct with anyone. These allegations came only four-and-a-half weeks before the general election on Dec. 12," Moore said. "Why now?"

"People have waited to 4 weeks prior to the general election to bring their complaints," he later added. "That's not a coincidence. It's an intentional act to stop a campaign."

I bet this was Michael Jackson's defense as well.

He added that the alleged incidents happened nearly 40 years ago and called them "very hurtful to me personally -- I have the highest regard for the protection of young children," before adding that he has never provided alcohol to a minor and has "not been guilty of sexual misconduct with anyone."

Moore added that there were ongoing "investigations" looking into the motivations behind the Post article, and promised "revelations" about the story to come in the next few days, though he did not provide further specifics.

The explosive Washington Post report Thursday based on interviews with more than 30 people detailed allegations that Moore pursued sexual relationships with several women when they were between 14 and 18 years old and he was in his 30s, including alleged sexual contact with the 14-year-old.

None of those three women told the Post that Moore sexually harassed, or assaulted them, or forced them into a relationship. Alabama's legal age of consent is 16.

Second - why right at election time? Not a coincidence indeed. If the people you abuse see you run for such a powerful position, of course they want to stop you. The push back against this crap starting with Weinstein (or maybe Cosby) gave women the confidence to come out.

Because women up till now where made out to be at fault. At trial the defense attorney does everything he/she can to show that the woman was a harlot. Now, a few women came forward. Then a few more about another man. That got things rolling. More women are now not afraid to come forward and that will bring more women forward to testify against their attackers.
