White House budget proposes increase to defense spending and cuts to safety net, but federal deficit would remain

By Damian Paletta February 12 at 11:41 AM

The White House on Monday released a tax and spending plan that would fail to eliminate the budget deficit after 10 years, its first public acknowledgment that large spending increases and the $1.5 trillion tax cut are putting severe pressure on the government’s debt levels.

The budget proposal, titled “Efficient, Effective, Accountable: An American Budget,” sets forth President Trump’s priorities as Congress prepares to consider spending bills for the next fiscal year.

It would continue to markedly increase military spending and set aside money for a wall along the Mexico border, among other things.

It also calls for major cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, and other social programs, reductions that have long been targeted by conservatives.

Austerity for the rest of us and an open checkbook for the Military Industrial Complex.

The opposite of President Eisenhower. In fact what he warned us about.

Was this in the budget that Congress passed last week. I don't recall that. Is the occupant of the WH making changes to budget that he already signed last week?

House passed last week and trump approved the one we will march with for the country?

How does the WH budget fit into the picture? If he had changes, shouldn’t he have giv n those to congress for incorporation and then signed it.

I don’t undrstand a budget from Congress and one from WH. Which budget dies the country operate under.

Thanks for helping me understand

Medicare?

food stamps?

Medicaid?

Those programs fund necessities that many, many Americans cannot afford without help.

Necessities.

10. White House Proposes $4.4 Trillion Budget That Adds $7 Trillion to Deficits.NYT
Mon Feb 12, 2018, 02:08 PM
Feb 2018

'President Trump on Monday sent Congress a $4.4 trillion budget with steep cuts in domestic programs and entitlements, including Medicare, and large increases for the military, envisioning deficits totaling at least $7.1 trillion over the next decade.

The blueprint, which has little to no chance of being enacted as written, amounts to a vision statement by Mr. Trump, whose plan discards longtime Republican orthodoxy about balancing the budget, instead embracing last year’s $1.5 trillion tax cut and new spending on a major infrastructure initiative.

The plan does not completely embrace the two-year budget deal struck by Congress and signed by Mr. Trump last week to boost both domestic and military spending by $300 billion. Mick Mulvaney, Mr. Trump’s budget director, informed House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, Republican of Wisconsin, in a letter that the president is proposing to pour much of the increased domestic spending in that package into defense and fixing “some longtime budget gimmicks” that have added to the nation’s deficits.'>>>

Is it legal for him to steal the consumer money and spend it on the military? That's not what the budget passed by congress calls for!

God, I don't know if I can take this. If russia steals the election in 2018m, I think our country will be ended as a liberal democracy and become a complete dictatorship of the oligarchs. drumpf will do everything in his power to hang on to ensure that nothing is done to stop russia and everything is done to destroy us, all for his own ugly, oh so ugly, perverted desires for greater wealth and power.

We already have the largest defense budget. If you really want to decrease spending, look at trying to fix how Military Acquisitions work, which has been an issue both sides of the aisle agree is a problem. It would reduce spending without cutting defense readiness, and reduce the deficit by billions of dollars. Then you can leave social safety nets alone.

You tell a Republican that we need to run a deficit in order to get involved in some foreign civil war and they get a yuuuuuuuge boner

Tell em that we might run a deficit doing something that would be useful on our shores and they go apeshit.
