President Trump on National Anthem Day said all Americans should proudly stand for the national anthem, echoing his frequent demand that professional athletes stand during the national anthem.
We salute our great American flag, we put our hands on our hearts for the Pledge of Allegiance, and we all proudly stand for the National Anthem, Trump said in a video taken at CPAC that he retweeted on Saturday.

Last year, the president began a feud with the National Football Association after he said team owners should fire players that kneel during the national anthem.
Trump has repeatedly said that professional athletes should stand during the national anthem. He has brought up the hot-button issue during widely seen events, like the State of the Union and the Super Bowl.

(2,585 posts)At the tender age (under 5 yrs) my country exposed me to radiation (Hanford Washington) in which at the age of 70 I had to have 3/4 of my thyroid removed due to 3 different types of cancer...what a nasty thing to do to a human being. I suffer from fatigue despite medication. My oldest adult daughter died from lack of medical care because we could not afford the doctor's fees (and she was working at a low paying job). And you expect me to honor this country? I am not that crazy.

(2,567 posts)I refused to pledge allegiance to the flag in elementary school, due to the crap I got daily because of my Slavic "behind the Iron Curtain" name during the McCarthy years.
Viet Nam resulted in my sitting out the national anthem. I've seen no reason to change since then.

(1,279 posts)has been our national anthem for only 87 years. When someone tells me I should stand for the national anthem, I go okay, recite the 4 stanzas of it and I will. I didn't even know there were 4 stanzas. I guess our founding fathers didn't think we needed a national anthem. I personally like the Russian national anthem the best.

(2,343 posts)racist, authoritarian horse shit. Never knew there was a national anthem day. Dipshits probably just made it up and people just fell in line acting like it's been around forever. Just like the sudden popularity of eating grilled cheese and tomato soup together.

(3 posts)That's not new, dear. I ate that as a young kid--it was a mainstay in our house. I am 59 now...
I think the "popularity" of it was just that someone mentioned it, reminding everyone, and now everyone talks about it. Really, though, I like it to peanut butter and jelly--poor man's lunch.

(2,343 posts)I like to annoy people (mostly my wife) by saying things like that. I always say "I'm 42. If i haven't heard about or seen something by now, it's simply just been made up." People just usually think I'm stupid.

When our land is illumined with Liberty's smile,
If a foe from within strike a blow at her glory,
Down, down with the traitor that dares to defile
The flag of her stars and the page of her story!
By the millions unchained who our birthright have gained,
We will keep her bright blazon forever unstained!
And the Star-Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave
While the land of the free is the home of the brave.
