Florida Senate passes bill raising age to buy guns, banning bump stocks
Source: CNN
The Florida State Senate passed a bill Monday that would raise the age to buy a firearm from 18 to 21, require a three-day waiting period for most gun purchases and ban the sale or possession of bump fire stocks, which can make it easier for a semi-automatic weapon to function like an automatic rifle.
The "Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act" (SB 7026) would also give law enforcement more power to seize weapons and ammunition from those deemed mentally unfit or otherwise a threat and provide additional funding for armed school resource officers and for mental health services.

The bill now moves to the Florida House. It's not immediately clear when the House will take up the measure.

Senate passes, but it still has to pass the hurdle of the Florida House.

Tell me how strong #MSDstrong is? They're getting movement, so pressure mounts on those in the Florida House of Representatives.

(6,377 posts)Hes been pretty vocal about increased gun control measures since the shooting. I think he sees the writing in the wall and knows if he wants to win a senate seat, this could haunt him if he doesnt push for change.

(8,699 posts)As far as I can tell, this kid was the first under 21 legal purchase of a weapon used in a mass shooting.
We need to ban assault weapons, certain ammunition and attachments like extended clips, bump stocks and cranks.
Background checks? Background checks in private and gun show sales are useless unless its coupled with registration and annual or semi-annual recertification of that background check and proof of possession of the registered firearm.
Limit all existing weapons to those for hunting and target shooting only.
Its worked in over a dozen countries that have had these strict restrictions in place for decades without issue.
