Senate Dem denounces Farrakhan's remarks

Source: The Hill

BY JULIA MANCHESTER - 03/08/18 10:04 AM EST

Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) ripped Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan early Thursday after the Nation of Islam leader said in a tweet that the "Jews have control" over government agencies.

Schatz was responding to a tweet from Farrakhan posted on Wednesday.

Farrakhan has come under fire in recent days for a speech given last month during which he said "powerful Jews" were his enemy, and said "the Jews were responsible for all of this filth and degenerate behavior that Hollywood is putting out turning men into women and women into men.” Several Democratic lawmakers are facing backlash for their reported ties to Farrakhan and their silence in response to his anti-Semitic remarks.

The Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC), a lobbying organization, on Tuesday accused Democratic Reps. Keith Ellison (Minn.), Barbara Lee (Calif.), Maxine Waters (Calif.), Danny Davis (Ill.), Andre Carson (Ind.) Gregory Meeks (N.Y.) and Al Green (Texas) of having ties to Farrakhan, and called for their resignations.

That said, the RJC can go to hell.

The Women's March Has a Farrakhan Problem

Excerpt:

It all came to a head last week, after Farrakhan delivered his address to the annual Nation of Islam gathering for Saviours’ Day, the sect’s three-day holiday honoring its founder, Wallace Fard Muhammad. Farrakhan denounced “Satanic Jews,” said that “when you want something in this world, the Jew holds the door,” and at the climax of his speech, proclaimed, “White folks are going down, and Satan is going down, and Farrakhan by God’s grace has pulled the cover off of that Satanic Jew—and I’m here to say, your time is up.”

Naturally, this renewed interest in just what the Women’s March was thinking. Mallory further stoked controversy when a woman questioning her about Farrakhan’s anti-Semitism drew a response from a preacher asking her to condemn Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and praying for Jesus to cast out the “wicked spirit laying on her heart.” Linda Sarsour surfaced to say the man was “too blessed,” and Mallory tweeted, “If your leader does not have the same enemies as Jesus, they may not be THE leader!”

It seems like there is a real ugly undercurrent of antisemitism in some corners of the progressive moment, unfortunately (The Linda Sarsour corner, for instance).

Across the whole spectrum of the Democratic Party.

You do know that, right?

Interestingly, the only people who seem to be required to answer for it are either people of color OR Sanders supporters or both

and while I am no fan of Linda Sarsour (and actually tend to agree with you), you might read this

Where's the outrage?

It took like two seconds for a 100+ reply OP attacking Tamika Mallory to spring up. It's been two hours and NO ONE has said ONE WORD about the others in our party who are in the same boat.

“I’ve spent my life fighting discrimination in every form, from anyone. I unequivocally condemn Minister Farrakhan’s anti-Semitic and hateful comments,” Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) tweeted Thursday. “This vitriol has no place in our society.”

Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) also disavowed the religious leader, writing on Twitter: “Farrakhan's anti-Semitic messages are upsetting & unacceptable. I always condemn hate speech of any kind.”

Carson distanced himself from Farrakhan’s rhetoric in a statement to POLITICO.

“As a Member of Congress, I have met with a diverse array of community leaders, including Minister Farrakhan, to discuss critical issues that are important to my constituents and all Americans,” he said Thursday. “While many of these leaders have long track records of creating positive change in their communities, this does not mean that I see eye to eye with them on all beliefs or public statements.”

Carson added: “Racism, homophobia, islamophobia [sic], anti-Semitism, xenophobia and other forms of intolerance have no place in our civil discourse.”

It's too bad it has taken this long for the mainstream of our party to speak out and only then under pressure and then seemingly only people from my community or from the victims of such hateful bile.

This divide among former brothers and sisters (brothers and sisters who gave their very lives in the 60s South) should not have occurred in the first place and should not have been allowed to fester.

It's not an opportunity for cynical political opportunism. It's an opportunity to heal.
