Trump: We're trying to top JFK by looking at Mars mission

Source: The Hill

BY MAX GREENWOOD - 03/15/18 12:34 PM EDT

President Trump said Thursday that he wanted to "top" former President John F. Kennedy's ambitions to send a man to the moon by pursuing a trip to Mars.

"We're looking at Mars, by the way," Trump said. "Trying to top [Kennedy]. We're going to get there. It's moving along pretty good. A lot of things have happened, Mike, having to do with that subject. Way ahead of schedule."

Kennedy, who served in the Oval Office from 1961 until his assassination in 1963, set the United States' sights on reaching the moon during the so-called "space race" with the Soviet Union.

The U.S. eventually reached that goal in 1967. The last U.S. moon landing was in 1972.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Exploration_Initiative

The Space Exploration Initiative was a 1989–1993 space public policy initiative of the George H. W. Bush administration.

On July 20, 1989, the 20th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing, George H. W. Bush — then President of the United States — announced plans for what came to be known as the Space Exploration Initiative (SEI).[1] In a speech on the steps of the National Air and Space Museum he described plans calling for constructing Space Station Freedom, sending humans back to the Moon "to stay" and ultimately sending astronauts to explore Mars. He proposed not a 10-year Apollo-style plan, but a long-range continuing commitment based on the three above elements, ending with “a journey into tomorrow – a journey to another planet – a manned mission to Mars.” The President noted it was humanity’s destiny to explore, and America’s destiny to lead. He asked Vice President Dan Quayle to lead the National Space Council in determining what was needed to carry out these missions in terms of money, manpower and technology.

The point of my post was that the tax rate was much higher in the sixties than it is now. 1961 was when the initiative was announced. 1969 was when it came to fruition.

You post what you want, and I'll post what I want. I didn't post ANYTHING about the "success" in lowering the tax rate. You are attempting to graft that onto my post.

My point wasn't about when or how often, or by whom the tax code was lowered but rather that the tax rates were higher throughout the effort to land a man on the moon, making it easier to pay for it, than it would be to land a man on Mars under the current rates.

Those remarks are sad and pathetic in so many ways.

To dream of a man on the moon by the end of the 1960s was a real dream. In 1961 much computing was still done by slide rule. I can't imagine what the comparable dream would be today, but it isn't Mars, which has been on the scope of scientists for decades.

To top John Kennedy - that just doesn't deserve a response.

Ahead of schedule? There is no fucking schedule. Yes, much research has been done, and much needs to be done. But when you don't have any legitimate science advisers, want NASA to be led by a political hack, and haven't funded the research adequately, don't talk to us about a schedule. And then there's the issue of corporate interested in the race to Mars and the economic, political, and geopolitical components of that decision.

This moran is making that original moran with the moran sign look like a fucking genius.

Etc. etc. etc.
