Senate Republicans on Monday dismissed the need for legislation to protect Robert Mueller, downplaying the chances that President Trump will fire him, despite Trump's recent attacks on the special counsel.
"I don't think that's going to happen, so I just think it's not necessary and obviously legislation requires a presidential signature and I don't see ... the necessity of picking that fight right now," said Sen. John Cornyn (Texas), the No. 2 Senate Republican, asked about legislation limiting Trump's ability fire Mueller.
He added that he believes Trump's public criticism of Mueller is "unhelpful" and agrees with his colleagues who have said firing the special counsel "would be a mistake and produce all sorts of unintended consequences."
Cornyn declined to say what the potential consequences would be.

(7,812 posts)make the firing a red line, unambiguously.
Instead, they send one or two congresspersons out to say something along the lines of 'would be a disastrous move'....'might mean the end of his presidency. maybe.'...
I'm sure they calculate who can come out and make the news once or twice, implying that republicans generally think Trump 'shouldn't' fire Mueller so that they don't have to pass legislation. In reality, almost no one has come out strongly and clearly...certainly not in any meaningful numbers. Who knows what the hell the majority thinks?
