6th, unexploded package bomb found at Austin FedEx facility: Sources
Source: ABC News
A sixth, unexploded package bomb was discovered today at the FedEx facility in Austin, Texas, two sources briefed on the investigation told ABC News.
The package, which is intact, was discovered by FedEx workers, the company said in a statement. It's believed to have been sent by the same individual who mailed a package bomb that exploded at a FedEx facility near San Antonio this morning, officials said, and could yield major clues in the hunt for the serial bomber terrorizing Austin.
"We have also confirmed that the individual responsible [for Tuesday's package bomb] also shipped a second package that has now been secured and turned over to law enforcement," FedEx said in its statement but did not reveal which of its facilities the package was discovered in.
The two sources confirmed to ABC News the undetonated package was discovered at an Austin facility, bringing the total number of devices connected to the investigation to six.

(6,241 posts)through US mail or through FedEx. I mean, either of the bombs that he sent via FedEx reached their target. One detonated in the shipping facility, and the other was found and captured by ATF/FBI. When he was doing it himself, he did the damage he wanted to do. So he probably lives in the Austin area, which is why the other 4 were here. Then he tried FedEx because he wanted less risk of being seen.

(1,204 posts)I couldn't imagine someone being so stupid to use their own account and address for a pick-up if they are shipping out bombs. Maybe even grabbing a legitimate package waiting for pickup, and then replacing the contents with his payload. Hopefully the person wasn't that elaborate and this gets him. I get a lot of packages from fedex and UPS. I'd rather not have to worry about them being a bomb. I'd say at least I'm not in Austin, but I won't be surprised if they start showing up in Houston and Dallas next. :/

(4,787 posts)His name was George Metesky. (He paused his work from 1942 to 1950 out of a spirit of patriotism, while the US was at war; he sent a letter to the NYPD informing them of that after his 1941 bombing attempt.)
From 1951 to 1956, he planted 31 more bombs around town in places where the public could go, 22 of which exploded. Over a dozen people were injured, but no one died. One style of bomb that he particularly liked involved him slitting a hole in a theater seat, into which he placed the bomb, hoping to get the next person who sat on it.
He had a beef with Con Edison (NYC's electric utility) but he also was a paranoid schizophrenic (as was the Unabomber). He was hoping to turn people against Con Ed. The judge found him to be legally insane and incompetent to stand trial. He was committed until 1973, and passed away in 1994.
Hopefully, the person in Austin left evidence behind in these last three packages.
