Lone DNC Hacker Guccifer 2.0 Slipped Up and Revealed He Was a Russian Intelligence Officer
Source: The Daily Beast
Guccifer 2.0, the lone hacker who took credit for providing WikiLeaks with stolen emails from the Democratic National Committee, was in fact an officer of Russias military intelligence directorate (GRU), The Daily Beast has learned. Its an attribution that resulted from a fleeting but critical slip-up in GRU tradecraft.
That forensic determination has substantial implications for the criminal probe into potential collusion between President Donald Trump and Russia. The Daily Beast has learned that the special counsel in that investigation, Robert Mueller, has taken over the probe into Guccifer and brought the FBI agents who worked to track the persona onto his team.
While its unclear what Mueller plans to do with Guccifer, his last round of indictments charged 13 Russians tied to the Internet Research Agency troll farm with a conspiracy for the purpose of interfering with the U.S. political and electoral processes, including the presidential election of 2016. It was Muellers first move establishing Russian interference in the election within a criminal context, but it stopped short of directly implicating the Putin regime.

(4,341 posts)and it got me thinking, that the Kremlin also went out to publish the man-child congratulating Putin on his "win". I am sure Putin and the Russians know that the USA would not congratulate Putin on a sham election...
After your comment I started wondering if this is a subtle way of Putin to slap the man-child on the wrist for signing on the new sanctions? I hope so...

(1,227 posts)This is the game Chump is so naive to. He's playing two sides against themselves to ameliorate his nefarious deals. Inevitably, someone is going to smack him; he's playing to his overt domestic base for desperate survival and his covert foreign benefactors are getting pissed-off about non-payment.
This is global politicking, not screwing a bank out of millionsby declairing bankruptcy.
Or, maybe it is.

(5,586 posts)From the article, we only know now because "Guccifer 2.0" forgot to use his anonymizing VPN client once when he connected with his servers. The subpoena power of the FBI and government tracked the unmasked IP address to the GRU HQ in Moscow.
It's a pretty high bar to prosecute Roger Stone for this.

(794 posts)In an October 2016 joint statement, the United States Department of Homeland Security and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence stated:The U.S. Intelligence Community (USIC) is confident that the Russian Government directed the recent compromises of e-mails from US persons and institutions, including from US political organizations. The recent disclosures of alleged hacked e-mails on sites like DCLeaks.com and WikiLeaks and by the Guccifer 2.0 online persona are consistent with the methods and motivations of Russian-directed efforts. These thefts and disclosures are intended to interfere with the US election process. Such activity is not new to Moscowthe Russians have used similar tactics and techniques across Europe and Eurasia, for example, to influence public opinion there. We believe, based on the scope and sensitivity of these efforts, that only Russia's senior-most officials could have authorized these activities.

And it is impossible to the self-proclaimed geniuses that inhabit JPR that Guccifer could ever be a Russian agent. It's not possible. Nope, no sirreeee.

(101,315 posts)of those in that thread - more "has not agreed to the terms of service" than you can shake a stick at. That explicit "I will support the Democratic nominee" promise was the best idea admin has ever had. Who knows what DU would have been like without it?
