CNN Poll: 42% approve of Trump, highest in 11 months

Source: CNN

By Jennifer Agiesta, CNN Polling Director

Updated 4:39 PM ET, Mon March 26, 2018

WASHINGTON (CNN)President Donald Trump's approval rating has rebounded to its highest level since the 100-day mark of his presidency, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS, even as his approval ratings for handling major issues remain largely negative.

Overall, 42% approve of the way Trump is handling the presidency, 54% disapprove. Approval is up 7 points overall since February, including 6-point increases among Republicans (from 80% to 86% now) and independents (from 35% to 41% now). Trump's approval rating remains below that of all of his modern-era predecessors at this stage in their first term after being elected, though Trump only trails Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama by a narrow 4 points at this point in their first terms.

Trump's approval ratings have seesawed over the last four CNN polls -- from 35% in December up to 40% in January, down to 35% in February and back up to 42% now. Looking at intensity of approval, however, the share who strongly approve of Trump's performance (28% in the new poll) and strongly disapprove (46%) have held relatively steady over a similar time frame, suggesting the fluctuation in Trump's ratings comes largely among those whose views on the President aren't that deeply held.

The President's strongest approval ratings on the issues come on the economy, the only issue tested where his reviews tilt more positive than negative: 48% approve and 45% disapprove. That isn't the case on foreign trade, however, the economic issue on which Trump has most recently taken action, implementing tariffs aimed at Chinese imports, steel and aluminum. On trade generally, 38% approve of the President's work while 50% disapprove.

As the article states, the swing comes from folks in the middle who have no strong views on Trump, either positive or negative. They just go by how things are looking around them. And right now the economy looks good. They are low info voters (you have to be to approve of Trump) who see a bustling economy and give Trump credit for it. They don't realize this is still the Obama economy. They don't realize that up until last week when Congress approved the omnibud budget bill, we were still operating under Obama's budget.

Trump isn't "handling" the economy or anything else. Whatever isn't already on autopilot, is being done for him, since he hasn't the faintest idea what he's doing in the first place. Trump knows how to "handle" the American economy about as well as he knows how to handle a yak with rabies.

This hub of untarnished, fact based, news stories. (Not talking about the comment sections)

I think you'd see very different numbers. Fact is almost half the population doesn't even vote. And almost half of those that do only hear fake news to shape their opinions.

Which reminds me of something that grates me. How Democrats are so damn shy about using 'strong' language. It took a year for them to call Trump a liar, to use that word. Same with the word racist. So Republicans, who have no quibbles about it pound salacious insults day after day on Democrats, for decades now. Long after Fox News and RW hate radio had been engaging in fake news, promoting invented scandals on the Clintons, or Obama, Trump and the Republicans once again pre-empt the shy Dems and first coin the term "fake news" and so make it 100x harder to accuse the other side of it. Now the term "fake news" is forever associated with CNN, MSNBC, NBC, ABC etc... Its because it works, to accuse the other side of what they are doing. Just like 'the big lie'.

Tue Mar 27, 2018, 07:36 AM

February it was 42%, which is what this poll is based on.

At the same time this approval does not appear to be that deeply held.

Those who strongly approve of trump's performance is 28%. Those who strongly disapprove of trump's performance is 42%.

Some other interesting observations from this poll:

40% to 33% margin, Americans say Trump's top appointees are more apt rather than less apt to misuse taxpayer money.

Trump's handling of foreign affairs merits 39% approval, with 53% saying they disapprove.

A majority (54%) disapprove of the way the president has handled gun policy, while 36% approve.

While this specific poll indicates a tick up in his approval, it should also be kept in mind that more people in this poll expressed disapproval of him.

The question is, what does approval translate to? In the majority of special elections that have occurred throughout the country, the candidate trump supported lost. What does that say?
