Governor Ducey suspends Uber from autonomous vehicle testing
Source: ABC15 Arizona
PHOENIX - Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has suspended Uber's self-driving vehicle testing privileges in the wake of a pedestrian fatality in Tempe last week.
Ducey told the company in a letter Monday that video footage of the crash raised safety concerns.

The move comes days after The New York Times reported that the company's own documents showed the testing program was rife with issues. The documents showed trouble with driving through construction zones and requiring far more human intervention than competing companies.
Experts have told The Associated Press that the company's technology should have detected the pedestrian in time to avoid the crash.

I suppose Uber's unnaturally darkened video was not quite enough to protect them.

not fooled
(5,801 posts)of the "let business run wild and the world will be paradise" idiotology. Of course Error-Zona was happy to show how wrong California was in not letting urber turn unwitting citizens into pawns.
When even a puke-laden state steps in, you know the business has behaved egregiously.
I hope a good consumer attorney sues uber to find out all the dirty laundry associated with pushing this program forward before (if ever) it was safe to do so.
Of course, douch-y only suspended the program. Countdown to when it restarts...
I thought it was sarcasm and meant Douchey from Fox and Friends...smh.

(44,973 posts)But we are not banning human driven cars as far as I can tell. If this car was driven by a human, it's probably be the same outcome.

(495 posts)Please see my response below, and particularly the Mill Ave video showing how well lit and highly visible the location of the accident is..
No, she should not have jaywalked. That does not change the fact, as many experts are pointing out, the car's sensors should have detected and reacted.

(809 posts)What is the difference between this and auto pilot on a plane? If you watch the video, she just comes out of nowhere in the dark directly in front of the car and I dont know if anyone could have avoided this. The human Uber driver could have been watching the road instead of looking down.

(44,973 posts)But doesn't appear that human had enough time to react. So, quite possibly the victim would have been run over if this was a regular car. But nobody is banning regular cars despite the fact that a lot of people die in car crushes.

(495 posts)I don't know if that was intentional, or Uber was using crappy cameras.
But YouTube videos have shown that is was a reasonably lit area with a clear sight line that would have given either an aware driver or a functioning SDC system plenty of opportunity to avoid her.
The spot of the accident is at about 33 seconds into this video. Pretty much below a street light. Which should be irrelevant because the car has radar and LiDAR.
