AP Poll: 33 Percent Of Young Americans Approve Of Trump's Job Performance

NEW YORK (AP) A majority of young people believe President Donald Trump is racist, dishonest and mentally unfit for office, according to a new survey that finds the nations youngest potential voters are more concerned about the Republicans performance in the White House than older Americans.
The poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and MTV found that just 33 percent of Americans between the ages of 15 and 34 approve of Trumps job performance.
Thats 9 points lower than all adults, who were asked the same question on a separate AP-NORC survey taken this month.
-snip-
The survey is the first in a series of polls designed to highlight the voices of the youngest generation of voters. The respondents, all of whom will be old enough to vote when Trump seeks re-election in 2020, represent the most diverse generation in American history.

(364 posts)People who supported Trump realize what a repulsive man he is. They thought they were throwing a molatov cocktail into a broken system.
Maybe the resistance movement and Trump supporters are part of the same process. Our country has reached a something-has-to-give moment in its history.

(2,596 posts)My guess is that this 33% are the offspring of tRump's staunchest supporters and they are going to parrot that to which they've become acculturated. Kids for the most part form their opinions based on what they hear from those within a circle they've been around. Some will be influenced by friends and others from outside their group - or "tribe" as it's called now, but most will hold fast to what they've learned by those who've had the most influence on them.

(32,637 posts)... however there is also a large chuck of teenagers who never read a newspaper and never watch a national news program. I'm sure there's also a percentage of kids who live in families where the only TV news is Fox News.
These teenagers shouldn't be asked questions about Trump (or the current state of affairs) because THEY HAVE NO OPINION! Or they might think they have one, but their opinion isn't valid.

(11,885 posts)And have skewed them to favor him in one form or another. The truth is they are probably a lot lower, around the lower 20's would be my guess. They get people to do these polls showing who they want to look good , and use techniques to get their desired results, and are paid for from the ones who want them done that way.

(44 posts)I believe pollsters pose their questions regarding trumps approval/disapproval to more conservatives to make the numbers look better. Why, because otherwise they would be the lowest in American history. And at this point, that's bad, real bad. So they ask more conservatives. Behind closed doors conservatives really dislike trump as a president. There are many issues about him they didn't expect or vote for. They have no problem with his agenda per se, it's all the other crap that goes on around him: the scandals, the relentless, sometimes inaccurate and embarrassing tweets, the disorganization of his administration, the dishonesty, etc on, and on. BUT if anybody were to publicly ask a conservative a question regarding trump's job performance, the scandals, etc, they will give a supporting, affirmative answer. They would rather do that than to admit they did something wrong (by voting for him). They would rather defend him rather than give the democrats something else to talk about; they would rather embarrass themselves on national TV before giving in to the democrats. To them this is a war between the two parties and the conservatives will always support their man. I didn't vote for trump, but I do support some of his agenda. What I don't like is all the bafoonery, the clowning, and the lying. To me he makes the whole act of being president seem like a reality show where much of what we see is fake. I'm afraid that this type of incompetence will get troops killed in action while his sons sit back and continue to be rich and feed off the taxpayers dollar.

That 30% or so of the public or, and more importantly, about 50% of WHO VOTES, support such a piece of shit, should scare us and push us to action.

(16,926 posts)going to have a population that has a given number of "less-educated" people - people that quit school, people that came from broken homes and had no support in growth and development, people that were raised in homes that do not support education. They've always been there and always will be.
THAT is where you get at least 20% of those that you question: "What the F**K are you thinking!?"
Then, consider the poll itself:
Who did they ask?
How do we know it was a "balanced" polling base?
Myself - I'm pleased that the number is lower than generally accepted "adult" numbers!
Get Out The Vote!!!!!!!!!!!
THAT will fix the numbers!

(81,238 posts)I don't get it, either. It just doesn't compute. I'm with you on that astoundingly high number. But there's something significant to keep in mind here: DENIAL. Because NOBODY likes to admit they were wrong, much less that they've been royally HAD.

And frankly, whenever I hear anything about what the trumpsters think, I can't help wondering how many of them are Russian trolls.

(14,742 posts)I'm not even sure how you can reach a broad range of 17-25 year olds. Certainly not direct phone. Social media? Not very reliable.
The problem is the respondents tend to be self selected. That isn't necessarily representative of the population or who in it will actually vote.
But I get they want some measure......

(14,742 posts)Thiss method has serious flaws. They "empanel" volunteers chosen by demographics, but it isn't random. If they were looking for a particular percentage of whites, conservatives, rural, etc, that would skew the results.
Yeah, no polling is perfect, but this is too easily wrong. And it can be very wrong.

(51,590 posts)and haven't been. They are like "studies" which can be skewed. The parents of these young people are the ones who influence them. They do not know very much and parrot their peers and parents.
We need to rely on the fact that we must GET OUT THE VOTE and work like mad up to the MIDTERMS! The GOP tricksters have not changed a bit since 2016 and everything is still in place for them to win and keep control of the House. We must not allow this and have to donate and volunteer for our local Dem candidates.

(525 posts)The final polls released before the election averaged predicting a Clinton victory in the popular vote by 3.2 points. Clinton actually won the popular vote by 2.1%. So the polls were only off by a point. National public opinion polls don't predict the Electoral vote.

(525 posts)One of my "favorite" stories about the American electorate is about Paula Jones. When her lawyers were preparing Paula for her Grand Jury testimony in her sexual harassment lawsuit against Bill Clinton, they asked her if she was a Republican or a Democrat. Paula responded: "Now when you say "Republican," are they the good ones or the bad ones"? There are literally adult Americans who know that little about politics.

(51,590 posts)Americans are extremely ignorant about the govt, history, geography and world affairs. Try being a teacher. When I had elementary school students who knew more about these topics than their "educated" parents I was shocked for the first few years in the profession. When I spoke with other teachers who were more experienced they told me that this has been "the norm" for about 20 years!
