Controversial candidate fails in bid for Parkway School Board seat

Source: St Louis Post Dispatch

Controversial candidate Jeanie Ames, who has called herself a “Confederate” and retweeted a tweet about banning Islam in the U.S., was defeated in the Parkway School Board race Tuesday.

Matt Schindler and Kevin Seltzer won the race. Schindler had 30 percent and Seltzer got 27 percent of the vote. Ames captured 12 percent.

Five people were in the running for two spots on the board. Jonathan Taylor was in last place. Like Ames, he got 12 percent of the vote. Amy Bonnett, the fifth candidate, had 18 percent.

Parkway weathered an unusually partisan and contentious school board race this year. Ames generated most of that controversy with her social media history. A dark-money group with ties to MassResistance Missouri, which has been designated a hate group, also involved itself in the race.

Ames and Taylor billed themselves as the “conservative” candidates in the race, with Ames referring to herself as a “pro-life” voice for the board. Both Ames and Taylor were also heavily critical of current Parkway administration and board members throughout the election

Schindler and Seltzer, on the other hand, voiced strong support for current Parkway leaders. Both have said they oppose arming teachers, want to make schools safer through building renovations and support student diversity.

Schindler said he wants to emphasize personalized learning, keep Parkway a destination district and focus on innovative and research-based curricula, especially relating to science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics

They've not been fairing well this evening.
