Trump sending National Guard troops to Mexico border

Source: NBC

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration began outlining a plan Wednesday to deploy National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to fight illegal immigration, but will probably not allow the troops to have physical contact with immigrants, according to three administration officials.

The planning follows an announcement by President Donald Trump on Tuesday that came as a surprise to many of his advisers.

"Until we can have a wall and proper security, we are going to be guarding our border with the military," Trump said on Tuesday.

The plans were laid out in a meeting with senior level Department of Homeland Security officials as well as in a meeting with the White House's National Security Council on Wednesday, according to the three officials. The exact number of troops and how long they will be deployed to the border will be solidified in the coming days, the officials said.

get people to think that we should give him the money to build the wall instead of manning the border with troops? Does he think he has a bargaining chip here?

The National Guard can only be used by the States for law enforcement. If Trump Federalizes a National Guard unit, it comes under command of the U. S. Army and the Posse Comitatus Act takes over. Trump's plan to use troops to apprehend undocumented border crossers only works if the Governor of the state deploys them.

No buy in from the state's Governor; no troops on the border.

Sounds about right, force the citizens to comply with the local NG and have 1000 of the most bad-ass soldiers ready to jump in if there is trouble. Eisenhower did not hesitate either, the troops were on station within days.

he and some pals went down to Douglas AZ to try and get a glimpse of Gen. Black Jack Pershing. some soldiers got in the boys' faces and asked themw hat they were doing around there and the kids pointed over to some shacks on the edge of town and said they lived there. the guard snickered and let them go on their way. the shacks were apparently the "red light" district. Grampa liked to tell that story.

that wiki article mentioned something I knew a little about but not all - that they brought a contingent of Chinese back with them. I know there are a lot of Chinese descendants in the Casas Grandes area but didn't know that detail of bringing some back across during yet another racist, paranoid period in our immigration history.

He's a reverse migrant; went back to Mexico because he could not stand the treatment in the US.

Lived in Texas when they still had "No dogs or Mexicans allowed" signs in restaurants.

I think you might be interested in reading "The Great Arizona Orphan Abduction" by Linda Gordon.

Grampa was an early social justice warrior - was on the school board back in the 30s, 40s, 50s. No Mexicans in the pool and English-only of course. He helped put an end to that bullshit. I think southern Arizona has always been more connected to Mexico than the northern half and the people generally more tolerant of each other. Pima county is one of the more progressive in the state.

Is he going to pull the NG troops that are backfilling active duty, or is he going to require the various governors to pony up people who will have to leave their normal jobs to twiddle their thumbs on their NG pay along the border five or six days a week?
Is the DoD ready to start paying hundreds of thousands of Manpower dollars in benefits to their dependents every month, including VHA/BAQ so they can keep their families in housing and food?

It costs to deploy the Guard. A different pot of money, true, but it still costs.

Think about it. You are in the guard, and normally you do your weekends a year and an occassional longer training excercise. Maybe you have been deployed for 6-12 months overseas putting your life on hold. Maybe you have been deployed to help with national disasters.

Fine. That's what you signed up for.

Now you will be deployed to spend a woderful spell in the desert running down fence jumpers. Oh, and you will be making $150 a week or whatever guard pay is for domestic deployments. You might be deployed for months at a time. Further disrupting your life.

You aren't learning a skill. You aren't doing anything you believe in.

What are you going to do when they ask you to re-enlist?

"Nielsen said the effort would be similar to a 2006 operation in which President George W. Bush deployed troops to help U.S. Customs and Border Protection personnel with non-law enforcement duties while additional border agents were hired and trained. President Barack Obama also sent about 1,200 troops in 2010 to beef up efforts against drug smuggling and illegal immigration."

also...

"Federal law prohibits the use of active-duty service members for law enforcement inside the U.S., unless specifically authorized by Congress. But over the past 12 years, presidents have twice sent National Guard troops to the border to bolster security and assist with surveillance and other support."
