The Boy Scouts of America doubled down Wednesday on its quest to become the scouting organization of choice for boys and girls, announcing it will drop "Boy" from the name of its signature program.
Chief Scout Executive Mike Surbaugh also unveiled the group's new "Scout Me In" marketing campaign aimed at promoting inclusiveness.
As we enter a new era for our organization, it is important that all youth can see themselves in Scouting in every way possible," Saurbaugh said.
The umbrella organization will retain its name, Boy Scouts of America or BSA. The term Cub Scouts, for kids 7-10 years old, is gender neutral and also will go unchanged. Boy Scouts, which includes kids from 10 to 17, will become Scouts BSA in February.

Scouting has always been family!
We actually left the organization over a decade ago when they came out officially against gay scouts.
That changed, too!

(10,303 posts)To me, having Boy Scouts and Girl Guides/Girl Scouts is so 20th Century. But that's my viewpoint as an outsider.
However, my opinion is that having separate troops in some circumstances for the main binary genders can be useful, especially in respect to certain activities that appeal to one gender and not to the other. But having a single Scouting association for all genders, a Scouting association that doesn't care about gender or sexual orientation, religious belief or lack thereof... that to me would appear to be the end game.
And Scouts should still sell Scout Cookies.

(2,199 posts)active member of the Boy Scouts since 1970. Earned my Eagle in late 1973, my younger brother earned his Eagle in 1978, our father was a member of the troop committee for the whole time we were young teenagers in the BSA. Jump forward to 2007, my eldest son earned his Eagle and in 2009 his younger brother earned his Eagle. So bottom line, we are a Boy Scout family, its in our blood and part of our DNA. None of us could care 2 figs if girls join the Scout Troop. It's all about teaching and showing young people citizenship, duty, honor, respect, courage, outdoor skills. I live and breath by the Scout Oath and Scout Laws. I strive to be a good role model for young people, both as a retired Army officer (38 years in the Army) and as a high school teacher now. Pity the change in the BSA hasn't come sooner as my daughter would probably be an Eagle Scout too. She has been on multiple camping trips with our troop, worked on multiple merit badges and rank advancement with her brothers. She attended weekly Scout meetings nearly every week and has worked on more Eagle Scout Service projects than I can remember. So bottom line, admitting girls to the BSA is not a big deal to me. I want young women to have the same opportunities to tell colleges and employers "I'm an Eagle Scout too."
