was sexual discrimination because it excluded women. The courts position was that the purpose of a draft was to get large
numbers of replacements for combat troop losses, meaning that draftees are primarily meant for combat duty.
Since women were banned from combat duty by law, this meant that there was no reason to register them.
Cut to 2018. Women are now allowed to serve in all combat positions they can qualify for service in the same
as men. There would be no legal justification for women to be excluded from being called up for involuntary
military service.
Several men have already filed suit against selective service registration because women are not required to.
The government position is that since registration is just registration, no males are being affected unfairly.
The counter-argument is that men who refuse or forget to register are banned from Federal employment and
denied Federal student loans and such, meaning they are paying a price women haven't had to.
At worst, the Pentagon will lower recruiting standards, go back to the "Stop Loss" policy of making guys return to active duty
and serve another combat tour and Trump will crash the economy to create a buyers market for recruiters.
