Four Women Accuse New York's Attorney General of Physical Abuse

Source: The New Yorker

Eric chneiderman, New York’s attorney general, has long been a liberal Democratic champion of women’s rights, and recently he has become an outspoken figure in the #MeToo movement against sexual harassment. As New York State’s highest-ranking law-enforcement officer, Schneiderman, who is sixty-three, has used his authority to take legal action against the disgraced film mogul Harvey Weinstein, and to demand greater compensation for the victims of Weinstein’s alleged sexual crimes. Last month, when the Times and this magazine were awarded a joint Pulitzer Prize for coverage of sexual harassment, Schneiderman issued a congratulatory tweet, praising “the brave women and men who spoke up about the sexual harassment they had endured at the hands of powerful men.” Without these women, he noted, “there would not be the critical national reckoning under way.”

Schneiderman is facing a reckoning of his own. As his prominence as a voice against sexual misconduct has risen, so, too, has the distress of four women with whom he has had romantic relationships or encounters. They accuse Schneiderman of having subjected them to nonconsensual physical violence. All have been reluctant to speak out, fearing reprisal. But two of the women, Michelle Manning Barish and Tanya Selvaratnam, have talked to The New Yorker on the record, because they feel that doing so could protect other women. They allege that he repeatedly hit them, often after drinking, frequently in bed and never with their consent. Manning Barish and Selvaratnam categorize the abuse he inflicted on them as “assault.” They did not report their allegations to the police at the time, but both say that they eventually sought medical attention after having been slapped hard across the ear and face, and also choked. Selvaratnam says that Schneiderman warned her he could have her followed and her phones tapped, and both say that he threatened to kill them if they broke up with him. (Schneiderman’s spokesperson said that he “never made any of these threats.”)

A third former romantic partner of Schneiderman’s told Manning Barish and Selvaratnam that he also repeatedly subjected her to nonconsensual physical violence, but she told them that she is too frightened of him to come forward. (The New Yorker has independently vetted the accounts that they gave of her allegations.) A fourth woman, an attorney who has held prominent positions in the New York legal community, says that Schneiderman made an advance toward her; when she rebuffed him, he slapped her across the face with such force that it left a mark that lingered the next day. She recalls screaming in surprise and pain, and beginning to cry, and says that she felt frightened. She has asked to remain unidentified, but shared a photograph of the injury with The New Yorker.

In a statement, Schneiderman said, “In the privacy of intimate relationships, I have engaged in role-playing and other consensual sexual activity. I have not assaulted anyone. I have never engaged in nonconsensual sex, which is a line I would not cross.”

The New Yorker is not exactly a conservative rag....

The only comfort that I have is that he heads a team of prosecutors, and they will still keep the cases going.

But it is worrisome, nonetheless.

For the record, I felt strongly that Al Franken was outrageously wrongly accused- and cannot for the life of me understand why he resigned. Or why Democrats pushed for his resignation.

In your closet.Especially if you are a man. This is political Judo at its finest. Attack the strengths of your foes.

If the Democrats are the party of "Womens issues" they are especially vulnerable to any accusations they are
being hypocritical by not believing allegations of sexual abuse/assault made by women against Democratic
men.

Wonder how long before Gilibrand calls for Schneiderman to step down?

I don't think the real object is to get him to resign because another Democrat would be appointed to the position
of Attorney General and go after Trump with renewed vigor. They want to leave a lasting stink on the AG office
by having him ask for an investigation, that could very likely reveal some embarrassing kinky sexual activity on
Schneiderman's part and drag past whatever Mueller does so Schneiderman would look bad if he tried to pick up
the ball, if Mueller is fired or otherwise, is stonewalled.

If he hangs in there, Schneiderman is painted under the same brush as Trump, and the Democrats lose the moral high
ground in the press if it comes down to the AG office going after Trump on its own.

If Schneiderman is forced out, they win by turning the Democrats against each other with the base claiming the party
threw a Democrat under the bus before a complete investigation took place, because of GOP ratfuckery the same as
what happened to Al Franken.

Many don't. The heart of this matter is was this all part of some "50 SHADES" fantasy role-playing these women
were down for or was it truly a case of a powerful man, intimidating or otherwise forcing women to do something
they otherwise would not do?

For all we know, these ladies may have just found out about each other and that could be a reason behind this coming
out at this time.

They wouldn't be the first women content to be the "other" women in a married man's life who gets pissed when she
finds out she is but one of several "other" women in a married man's life.

Are you reading a different DU than myself? I hardly think DU is a hotbed of "sexist defenders of violent porn". Would you care to cite one instance of that? Please.

Sorry, but I take exception to that accusation. I believe many men are being accused of actions of which they're entirely innocent, just so men hating women can get a few free blows in themselves. If this fellow had an "R" after his name there would be zero questions about the veracity of these ladies' statements and the pitchforks and torches would be out. Any stated skepticism of their claims would be loudly and violently shouted down.

But since he has a "D" after his name, then it's an obvious "ratfucking" operation and these claims are instantly suspect. This from the same people who have been saying for months that all claims of sexual misconduct should be wholeheartedly accepted, and that to ask for any kind of proof is misogyny.

We can't have it both ways. Deciding which claims to accept and which to deny based on the political affiliation of the accused is hypocrisy, pure and simple.

We want to believe that since we're the "good guys" that anyone on our "team" is a good and virtuous person, particularly if they're a person of prominence.

The ugly truth is that people are fallible and their politics aren't necessarily indicative of their virtue.

Where the rubber meets the road is how we react. If we ignore, minimize, or defend those on our side when they're accused of these things, we're no better than the Republicans who hand-waved Trump's depravity away as "locker room talk."

I was really disheartened to see so many DUers defending Schneiderman or lamenting his loss as a weapon against Trump, with not a word of sympathy or empathy for the women he abused. We are not who we thought we were, and that's disappointing.

I can’t help but wonder if this is an attempt to take out Schneiderman because Republicans know that he is effective and New York, as home to Trump Family Criminal Enterprises, has standing to indict actions that Mueller eventually hands off to them to try to prevent Trump from pardoning every criminal in his vicinity.

This will probably have legs, in view of the Me Too movement. He made his bed when he chose to have mistresses (no pun intended).

Violence against women is even more pervasive than I thought. Once he hit them once, why did they see him again, if they did? Doesn't everyone know that such a thing ends any relationship? It's over. Finito.

At first I wanted to give Schinderman credit, but now that I've read these women's stories, I believe them. Schinderman is a monster. He's a drunk and mixing drugs to fuel his behavior. Why he's doing it, is anybody's guess, but all these women's stories are too similar but they don't share the same circles. This isn't a witch hunt.

Wants Schneiderman to survive this with his career on life support. These charges will follow him around and have pretty
much killed his chances of being NY Governor or a future US Senator if there is any truth to them, so the GOP would be
better off if he hangs in there.

They could bring this up again if he goes after Trump with state charges. That's what they do best, drag everybody
into the swamp. Nobody is clean, nobody has the moral high ground. It's just your team versus their team and you
hold your nose and vote for your guy because the other guy is just as bad in his personal life, but he's on the other
team and that should be the only thing that matters.

Even if it was all consensual sexual activity, Schneiderman has probably seen his future prospects at running for
higher office die this day.

DAYUM what shitty news! As we were watching Rachel Maddow roll out the story on her show, my husband and I looked at each other and agreed - they've "killed" Schneiderman. He's smeared. And as such, he's probably out of the game now, or within the next 18-24 hours. Certainly by the end of the week, which is about how long it took to decapitate Al Franken. If indeed these charges are true. And assuming there wasn't some Michael Cohen money changing hands somewhere...

That doesn't mean the New York investigation is cut of at the knees, though, does it? Wouldn't Schneiderman's deputy or second-in-command step in and take over? Perhaps now we have to wait and see if the prosecutors in the DC/Virginia area suddenly face some old dirt, as well.

Knowing the scent of trump lingers here, I have to concede I am suspicious of this. I want to believe the women, but I'm still suspicious.

I’ve heard the comment uttered that this was a “50 Shades...” thing. That it comes down to a yen for really kinky sex.

Even so, YUCK!!!! That isn’t what I can ever consider any kind of turn-on.

And you’re right. It’s on him. And I too find it mighty hard to sympathize when this type of wound is self-inflicted.

My first instinct on this episode was suspicion particularly because of A) the political aspect and the Mueller consideration and B) because of who the opposition is and their penchant for dirty tricks and dark arts - (anything that has even a whiff of Roger Stone in it is Suspect-As-All-Hell). But condoning the specific behavior as the details came out isn’t possible. Sadly, even when it means having to take a prime player out of the team.

Stephanie Ruehl on MSNBC just called it “hypocrisy after dark.”

What do you mean by "professional"? Someone who just does it as a job for income or someone that is aroused by humiliating and inflicting mental/physical abuse on another person?

So if there was video of him calling these women whores and slapping them across the face you would think that was acceptable behavior as long as the women agreed to it?

I've listened to a number of sex therapists and BDSM practitioners discuss these activities. In the same way that that some people like physical impact (approaching pain) in their sexual play, some (female AND male) like "verbal" impact as well. Doesn't do anything for me, but to each his or her own.

nb - most people who take up the job of being a Dominatrix don't do it because they couldn't get a degree in accounting. If you're only doing it to pay the bills, you're likely not going to be successful.

While if consensual I don't think it should be illegal or anything, it's not going to be appropriate for any politician/office holder. Add in that they all allege it was not consensual and it is moving into criminal territory though.

except the kind of people who take angry, cemented positions and launch into battle instead of merely expressing reasonable, honest beliefs and support based on current information.

This isn't really a post-truth world, just that too many are acting as if they're living in one.

For me, who is not yet home but posting on an iphone, I have had no opportunity to read YET.

So jumping to conclusions either way is inappropriate until I've had that chance. But so too is demonizing everyone who is not yet willing to conclude one way or the other because they haven't had the opportunity YET to read it.

And, no, it is NOT appropriate to DEMAND no one post to a breaking news thread any first impressions prior to reading the article. Certainly over the course of the next few hours and in other threads, yes, but these derisive posts towards those not yet ready to embrace a lynch mob are just wrong.

“It’s been my great honor and privilege to serve as Attorney General for the people of the State of New York. In the last several hours, serious allegations, which I strongly contest, have been made against me. While these allegations are unrelated to my professional conduct or the operations of the office, they will effectively prevent me from leading the office’s work at this critical time. I therefore resign my office, effective at the close of business on May 8, 2018.”

There are people who engage in BDSM, HOWEVER, the mantra of those who practice that is SAFE, SANE, CONSENSUAL, meaning that whoever does this never lets any of the action get into something where someone was actually in danger. If this person tries to claim there was consent involved, there can and will be any number of bdsm practitioners of all genders (especially in New York), who could gladly puncture that balloon, asking him simple things like "Ok, did you establish a safeword before you played?" Most of the more reputable BDSM clubs would not allow the stuff shown in "50 shades"because it was clear Mr.Grey did not give a damned about the consent of his sub, which meant he would be on a list of people to not let in, and to call the cops if the guy did not want to leave. Part of the whole reason clubs like that were formed is so that if some asshole tried to ignore the safe sane consensual business, they could be tied up in a way not arousing them, and left waiting for the police, which of course, scared people away who did not want their co workers or church goers to know what they did on a Saturday night.

In short, of this guy keeps screaming "it was consent" bring in the NYC bdsm community who will make him look like a fool.

138. This has nothing to do with BDSM. He attacks people when he's drunk and angry.
Mon May 7, 2018, 10:10 PM
May 2018

Read the article. He attacked his girlfriend while they were fully clothed, not engaging in sex. He smacked her across the face so hard it burst her eardrum. Then he strangled her.

He attacked another woman when she rebuffed his sexual advance.

The stories sound credible. The women told people at the time. There are pictures of the marks he left on their faces.

If he claims this is BDSM (as sadly many rapists do) then that is an illusion that can be easily dispelled.

broke up and reconcilled with him 3 times. If a man hits a woman the first time they're together, the only thing to say is "good-bye".

No doubt, the article reads badly for Schneiderman, but it's only the women's side and description of events. Schneiderman certainly deserves his day in court. It was also the correct decision to resign.

They needed time to coach the women on how to have the greatest effect in presentation and then coordinated the charges to come out at the same time. No doubt the Republicans will simply discard the women one the desired political damage has been achieved.

I would expect there are more bombshells hidden from view that will be dropped as the mid terms get closer. The Republicans are the dirtiest players in politics and have been for decades.

There's a lot of comments in this thread that are way off and showing ignorance to the New Yorker piece. Read it before reacting and then react to what you read, not what you think the headline and brief here says.

For the record. I'm glad these women came forward and this man exposed. He needs to be removed from office and Democratic circles and he needs years of help to straighten his ass out, and then he can make amends.

But, regardless, the fact the victims told others, is proof undeniable.

If he did threaten further abuse, via his power as public servant (due to his - out of control - behavior) he should be prosecuted.

Looking for the trump hand in this is just blurring the point.
The real point is, He was one of the good guys!!
That is what makes my head explode.
Everything he did publicly ( that I know of) was correct.

And beneath he is a controller, a predator of the worse kind....
