Cuomo calls for NY attorney general's resignation amid abuse allegations
Source: The Hill
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) called for the state's Attorney General Eric Schneiderman (D) to resign on Monday after four women accused him of abuse.
"I do not believe it is possible for Eric Schneiderman to continue to serve as attorney general, and for the good of the office, he should resign," Cuomo said in his statement.
"No one is above the law, including New York's top legal officer. I will be asking the appropriate New York District Attorney(s) to commence an immediate investigation and proceed as the facts merit," he said.
Cuomo's call for Schneiderman to resign comes on the heels of a New Yorker report, which detailed the accusations against the attorney general from four women.

(49,001 posts)"No one is above the law" means that anyone can be charged after appropriate procedure, which requires evidence that may include testimony. It also means that they can only be convicted with due process, if they are found guilty. Until then ALL people are presumed innocent before the law.
"No one is above the law" does NOT apply to extra-judicial actions such as firings or pressure to resign.
I do not know what is best or appropriate here. One thing is certain though: It is difficult for women to come forward publicly with allegations such as these and attach their names. When they do, they should be listened to with careful consideration. Not necessarily instantly believed but provisionally given credence.
but as did NOT happen with Franken, an investigation needs to take place. This guy has done what he could to circumvent some of the bad things Trump has done.

(49,001 posts)To me it looks like he should step aside (take some kind of leave of absence until this is investigated and there is greater resolution).
On edit: I've been made aware there is the election for NY AG in November. Therefore he should step aside only if he is sure it can be resolved quickly in his favor; otherwise resign, effective the date of the election or of the swearing in of the new AG-elect. If this drags into the campaign he is likely to lose which would be bad for the Party and for chances of making Trump subject to the Rule of Law.

(14,490 posts)If so, this situation would leave the door open to any fringe group to do a setup to bring down any powerful figure they don't like. That was done to a degree to Senator Franken.
The hangover of this is New York losing a lot of legal experience and disruption of cases. If he's guilty, I couldn't agree more.

(28,075 posts)and so I remain skeptical. Whether I will be or not after I read it remains to be seen.
Seasoned, experienced reporters have fallen for less salacious stories and Cuomo & Gilligran both seem awfully anxious to jump on this bandwagon and I don't trust either of them.

(409 posts)I think you will find it hard to conclude this is a "hit job." The article cites numerous people on the record, by name -- even Salman Rushdie! The reporters saw photographs and medical records, spoke to doctors and friends. And Schneiderman's denial is extremely weak.

(28,075 posts)and listening to Rachel and hearing these began as consensual, dating relationships does go a ways in making me rethink my first post (see another post I added downstream) even without reading the article (which I will still do, but not so much because I need convincing now.) Amazing how fast Rachel & what you added can make a person rethink something.

Who needs the Russians or republicans?
Right now nothing has been verified... Its a far cry between the verification of Trumps assaults on women, an AG investigating Cohen, and a well developed ops operation against democrats and progressives in power full positions.
It doesn't matter if it's true or not, it only matters if it can do damage. Seen it in my state and my city. I'll eat my words if it turns out 100% true, but I think as we find out more, the damage will already be done.
Bait and switch.
