Hours after President Donald Trump pulled the U.S. out of the Iran nuclear deal, former Secretary of State John Kerry weighed in and also took aim at accusations hed been engaging in shadow diplomacy, playing it off as primarily an effort to keep informed on international affairs.
Speaking to MSNBCs Nicole Wallce, Kerry defended his recent talks with multiple foreign leaders, stating, My conversations with these people are the normal conversations that I assure you every former secretary of state has with leaders in other countries with people that we know as we try to educate ourselves and make sure were up to date on whats happening in the world. These are normal conversations. And all I did was suggest to them, Look, you guys really ought to try to keep the agreement. I hope youll keep the agreement and continue to keep the agreement.'
And Kerry hopes that ends up being the case. He went on to cite the Paris Agreement on climate change, from which Trump already pulled out, while other countries and even U.S. states have continued to embrace it.
Kerry also blasted the presidents decision to leave the Iran deal, stating that hes now created confrontation, isolated the country and placed U.S. foreign relations in a precarious situation. The real point was, in Kerrys view, not that the deal was a win under the Obama administration, but that it was agreed to by the international community itself.
