Over 200 Headstones Spray-Painted With Swastikas At Illinois Cemetery

GLEN CARBON, Ill. -- More than 200 headstones were spray-painted with swastikas at an Illinois cemetery overnight, CBS affiliate KMOV reports. Police were called to the Sunset Hills Cemetery in Glen Carbon on Saturday morning after the black spray paint was discovered.

The cemetery is the resting place for more than 1,300 veterans. Officials are working to clean up the vandalism before a Memorial Day event on Monday and plan to power wash the tombstones to clean them.

This is the first time the cemetery has been vandalized, the cemetery owner told KMOV but he's still considering installing security cameras at the property.

Police were also called to a nearby neighborhood after residents found the same spray paint on homes and at least one vehicle.

The Edwardsville Police Department posted video to Facebook that showed security footage of a possible suspect. They said they are investigating and urged anyone with information to call 618-656-2131.

4. This is despicable...

probably young kids out for a kick and not really realizing what they're doing. If they catch them (there is a good chance, being that part of a neighborhood was targeted too, perhaps cameras caught them in act), they need to make them clean off every single one of these tombstones (restore to original shape). Then, diversity training, and then civil duty.

5. Backwards?

If I recall, the swastika displayed in this fashion refers to an eastern good luck symbol. But it was the Nazis who appropriated the image and reversed it to symbolize their hateful fascism.
Pls correct me on any point.

A horrible act of vandalism to be sure, but can we not take some small solace in the idea that these misguided kids (if that's what they were) actually used a good luck symbol instead of the hateful image they tried to use?

where my dad and his parents are buried!

in skinhead territory in PA was vandalized in this way. Swastikas, backwards, and we’re not Jewish. Three time losers. Too bad the original Nazis weren’t as dumb as the current form.

Could never figure out why these morans (sic) picked that cemetery except maybe they saw Old Testament first names (everybody up there has German last names to this day) and figured an Abraham just had to be Jewish. Sheesh. 🙄
