Virgil Goode’s presidential campaign submits signatures to Virginia
Source: Washington Post
With the race for president possibly coming down to Virginia and a few other swing states, Goode could tilt the election if he secures a spot on the state ballot.
Its a prospect that worries some Republicans and delights Democrats, who will have to wait until next week to find out whether enough of the signatures hold up for Goode to qualify. As a conservative, Goode would likely take more votes from Republican challenger Mitt Romney than President Obama, observers from both parties said.
Its a very real concern, said state Sen. William M. Stanley (R-Franklin), who occupies the seat Goode held for 24 years. Hes still very popular in the 5th (Congressional) District. Everybody knows Virgil. I think the world of Virgil. But a vote for Virgil is a vote for Obama.
Senate Minority Leader Richard L. Saslaw (D-Fairfax) described Goode as a serial party-switcher who has grown more conservative. If youre a conservative and you want your views reflected, Virgils your guy, he said.

You may remember escaped mental patient Goode for his hilarious fear of coins stamped with "In Moo-hammad we trust":
According to Larry Sabato, Goode turned in double the number of required signatures, so he's got a strong shot at being on the ballot.
Good to know that the batshit crazy former GOP congressman has an opportunity to split the wingnut vote and make Virginia that much harder for Willard to win.

(10,857 posts)Those of you unfamiliar with Virginia politics may be unaware that Goode coasted through the last decade of the 20th Century as one of the last Dixiecrats in Congress, a conservative so paleolithic that he refused to represent the party that freed the slaves. He presided over a tobacco-growing region of Virginia, the politics of which were set in stone somewhere around the 1720s and which have scarcely changed at all since.
Goode began to face pressure from horse-country Republicans based out of Charlottesville, and after a couple of narrow wins, Goode cynically boxed out his Republican opponents through a multi-year shift first to independent, then eventually over to the GOP once the last of the racists jumped ship during Gingrich's reign of terror in the House.
As a legislative analyst, Goode took exactly five minutes of my time every year. He would send up one or two terrible bills designed to placate his knuckledraggers, then toe the line on every other bad Republican idea that came along. He could be depended on to vote in favor of personal enrichment, revoking rights, stepping on women and minorities, and making life for the poor harder. He was certainly one of the GOP's spies within the Democratic caucus in the House.
One could argue that Goode could be bad for Virginia Democrats in the sense that he might pull Virginia's paleo-Democrats over to his side, but those people are not going to vote for a black President anyway, so fuck 'em. Goode is merely ensuring that those awful people won't vote for Romney, either. No Virginian of conscience will vote for him, leaving only the Republican edge for him to grind.

(9,992 posts)He's a total wingnut looney a-hole, but I would have GLADLY signed at petition to get him on the ballot b/c the people that love Virgil will never vote for Obama and he'll only steal votes from Rmoney.

(4 posts)If he gets on the ballot we will see what the future could be - a "conservative" party split from the Republicans that will split the wingnut vote, ensuring Democratic victories for decades to come. A guy can dream...

(11,175 posts)Unfortunately, the lesson of 2000 is that conservatives are generally more pragmatic than liberals when it comes to no-hoper "ideologically pure" candidates. If Pat Buchanan had done only a little bit better, Gore would have become President. Our problem was that Buchanan didn't do nearly as well as Nader.
We can hope that right-wing dissatisfaction with the flip-flopping Romney will be great enough to give Goode a decent showing.
