Gas prices have soared, and some areas of the country are feeling it more than others.
The sharpest price hikes have hit the Midwest. Over the past month, the average price per gallon of gas in Michigan has shot up 32 cents, more than any other state. Its statewide average recently hit $3.15, according to data from GasBuddy, a platform that tracks real-time prices at stations across the country.
North Dakota's gas is $2.96 on average, about 29 cents higher than a month ago. And Wisconsin's gas hit $2.94 per gallon, a 28 cent increase. Wyoming, Minnesota and Ohio round out the top six.
The national average price per gallon of regular is creeping toward the $3 mark, making it the most expensive for a Memorial Day weekend since 2014, according to the American Automobiles Association.
Soaring gas prices can be attributed to factors like oil production cuts orchestrated by OPEC and Russia, Venezuela reducing output, and the United State's decision to leave the Iran nuclear deal.

(43,153 posts)about 92 cents per barrel at one point I think I heard.
Look at this site: https://oilprice.com/
Check the prices on the lower right. West Texas Intermediate down $2.83 a barrel on Friday. The price is not showing up at the retail pump over this long holiday weekend. Wonder why that is?

Remind them that they and we are getting wammied in extra shipping costs when they go to their supermarket to buy groceries, cigarettes, their favorite Booze, etc. . How do they get to the shelves? By Truck! Rising gas prices are passed on to consumers .
Let that sink in for a moment.

Seeing the prices change in real time, wow.

(16,784 posts)For Truck drivers, and other workers in industries that rely on consumer goods getting to shelves by truck. It is a vicious cycle that penalizes everyone.
I have to charge more for shipping when I send out finished product to my clients.

There is a formula which has the cost of Crude and the Retail pricing. And part two of that formula states the economic effect on the National Economy, dollars taken out of disposable income.
Watch for this piece of legislation to come the forefront before year end. A national right to work law,Trump just pulled a end around with GSA on Thursday, and,Paul Ryan is chomping at the bit to drop his National right to work Bill.

(16,784 posts)will devastate Unions, both Public and Private, as we know them to be...a watchdog for workers. My husband is retired UAW and continues to this day to remain active in the UAW.
What National Right To Work law would entail besides Unions being pretty much torn apart is....
No weekends off
No paid overtime after 40 hours
No earned wage increases for excellence, loyalty to employer
No paid 3 day bereavement leaves
No paid vacations earned
No healthcare benefits
No secured pensions
No safety regulations in the workplace
No right to file grievances for employer abuses
No right to express political opinions regarding candidates who support worker's rights
No right to collectively bargain for better wages and benefits
These are just a few reasons WHY Unions are important to securing the Middle Class and rising from poverty.

(34,661 posts)we did not win every Bargaining Election for higher wages and paid benefits, but, where we did win, those folks today have cost of living clauses in their Bargaining Contracts or re-opener clauses .
The folks I fear that are getting ate alive by the Oligarch Class are the retirees and all those non Union workers.
The present Administration has adopted the Indentured Servitude Model as their center Labor piece for our country.
Here is the story to watch. Culinary Union Contract here in Vegas. 60k plus workers, main bargaining issues, pay and Health Insurance premiums.
Teamsters just came of a major victory with the major Trash Hauler, guaranteed forty hour week for the next five years for all those under contract at the day of signing. Most of the Trash Trucks run two man crews and they are going to one man automated side dump operations. Know one loses his or her job for five years.

(6,974 posts)To my utter surprise , several friends are telling me that their friends and relatives are starting to not like that Fatso pie-in-the-sky as much as they did when he was installed into the White House. Yep, I still can't believe what friends are telling me
The only issues is that if Fatso says soaring gas prices are Pres. Obama's fault, it'll trigger their tRump-humping friends and relatives to say yes it is his fault, although that chorus isn't as loud as it's been they tell me, because I think even they realize that Pres. Obama's been OUT of office almost 3 years now, and he LEFT gas prices much lower than what's happening with tReasonous Fat ass

(651 posts)Talking with my tax person, starting next tax year personal deductions for waged employees is going away. So anyone that has to buy supplies to do their job that is not supplied by your employer, those deductions will no longer be allowed. Also, people that got their "huge" tax cut, they may be getting a bump in their paycheck but when they go to file next year they will be getting back less. My tax person said essentially they are loaning you some money during the year but will be taking it away from you by shrinking what you will get back when you file your return. She also said essentially if you make six figures and up you are getting the benefit of the tax cut, the rest, a big too bad.

(16,296 posts)When Obama was first elected and the conservative media folk predicted $6/$8 per gallon because - well, just because he's Obama. Now, not a peep as gas is inching (or leap-frogging in some cases) to the $3 mark and will go beyond it as oil companies squeeze the pennies out of the middle class.

(11,885 posts)But was trump behind this to help Russia and Putin, screwing over the American people , and like he's doing now in many area's forcing prices to skyrocket. The ACA will be going up 90% in 2-3 years, food prices jumping up from no labor to pick crops, and cars and many other goods expected to rise a lot. All caused by trump and his policies.

(50,949 posts)think they should stay up. It makes people think twice about those planet-destroying semi trucks that all those families of 4 need for trips to the grocery store.
People should pay a premium on gas according to how much their vehicle pollutes and sucks up resources.

(17,912 posts)but it's going to be oh so painful to fuel their monster vehicles while they attempt to sell them, both financially and emotionally. But...but...but, their lifestyle? (32,638 posts)Actually I don't know what the gasoline price is now, because I was in Germany almost 2 years ago. But their posted gasoline prices are per liter, and there are approximately 3.5 liters per gallon. Well that's the number that I use for quick on-the-fly comparisons. The only thing in their favor is the Euro is strong vs. the dollar right now.
All I'm saying is, we could have it a lot worse.
