Starbucks shuts 8,000 stores for anti-bias training

Source: Reuters

MAY 29, 2018 / 10:07 AM / UPDATED 2 HOURS AGO

Reuters Staff

(Reuters) - Starbucks Corp (SBUX.O) appealed to customers for forgiveness in a row over racial profiling on Tuesday, saying its behavior toward two black American customers last month had been reprehensible as it closed 8,000 stores for anti-bias training.

The company has settled privately with the two men after the incident in a Philadelphia store on April 12 and will try to draw a line under the row with a day of workshops in traditionally slow afternoon hours which Wall Street analysts say will only cost it $5-$7 million in lost business.

Starbucks executive chairman Howard Schultz, the architect of its move into a cafe format in the late 1980s, said in an open letter that the decision to call police and their subsequent arrests “were reprehensible and did not represent the company’s mission and enduring values”.

“We determined that insufficient support and training, a company policy that defined customers as paying patrons—versus anyone who enters a store—and bias led to the decision to call the police,” he said.

She even gives specialized instruction for management and CEOs, and some of them cry. She cuts no slack.

and making a difference after realizing Management has to try and fix a National Problem. Thank you Starbucks for addressing a much needed change.

Sure will piss off the NAZI/GOPers.

What am I, as a fairly white man, supposed to do? Make my own coffee? This is an outrage, I tell you!

(Note: I've never been to a Starbucks, and make myself two cups of coffee every morning.)

I'd be up all night, writing long, dense, and annoying essays to post on DU. I prefer herb tea in the evening. I like various herbs.

from around my property. Year ago, I was seriously injured in an auto wreck, and after extensive surgery, found myself on "pain-killers." They aren't good for you long-term. There is one herb, for example, that stops pain, with zero side-effects, that grows wild in the northeast in gravel and along creeks. If I mix a little mint in it, it tastes okay, and is helpful.

I grow a few in my flower gardens. And, many decades ago, I assisted an "herb doctor," a Native American who lived nearby. So I became familiar with a variety of other plants.

I've been weeded some of the flower gardens this morning, in between my DU breaks. There are seven baby rabbits under my front porch -- half wild, half tame -- that are watching me closely. And we have two gray fox that come 2-3 times per day to the edge of the lawn to dine. This morning, my son left some salmon for them.

Life is good.

...we are a liberal area up here. SB has gone on record and said this is the beginning. and they have gone on record saying this type of behavior has ZERO tolerance in their organization. They have hired some of the very best top guns as far as anti bias training. I applaud them.

That peeps can set there using WiFi and nurse a coffee or maybe not even have one? Maybe some workers need a big refresher but I think the "big shutdown" for several hours (of course when it's slow anyway) is all for show and press coverage.
