LEXINGTON, S.C. (AP) A Baptist church in South Carolina has voted to remove a statue of Jesus Christ because some believe it's too "Catholic" for their place of worship.
The hand-carved, 7-foot (2-meter) statue and accompanying reliefs showing scenes from the life of Christ have been displayed outside Red Bank Baptist Church in Lexington for a decade.
But Pastor Jeff Wright says the statue is being taken down this week. In a letter, Pastor said some congregants feel it is "Catholic in nature," and it needs to be removed to avoid confusion. He did not explain why. Wright didn't return telephone calls or respond to messages The Associated Press left in person with his staff Wednesday.

According to them, Catholics are not Christians either.

"We need something like what Jerry Falwell did in the 1980s. We need a moral majority-made up of Christians, Jews, Mormons, Catholics and many others of faith-to come together to take a stand for our religious freedoms and rights."

Of course there are some Catholics who say Protestants are false Christians.

(18,012 posts)I was raised to believe Mormons were a cult spawned by satan. Well, they got part of that right and not the part about the guy with the horns and a pitchfork. Broken clock moment, I guess. They also fervently believe Catholics are going straight to hell, seeing as they're in league with the anti-christ and all. So much hate, simply because one group believes in a slightly different myth than another. Strange people, fundys of all stripes.

(2,787 posts)Wouldn't happen anyway and even if it did neither mainstream Protestants or mainstream Catholics are not going to accept Mormons or Jews who don't accept the deity of Christ as Christians.

(42,309 posts)The Catholic Church accepts others baptized in the Christian faith as fellow believers as long as they are baptized in the trinitarian fashion, i.e., "In the Name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit", which includes most mainstream Protestants and the Orthodox. However, Mormons don't follow that pattern and are "properly" baptized if they convert (this may go for some Unitarians and a few others, I can't remember and it no longer really matters to me--treat people decently and I don't care what you believe-if anything- beyond that).
Of course, that hasn't filtered down to a lot of self-righteous 'believers'....

(15,044 posts)A Catholic cross is a crucifix, whereon the crucified Christ is depicted, while Protestant churches display an empty cross, signifying the resurrection.
I'm surprised they didn't opt to remove the 12 bas-relief placards as well, given as they depict the 12 Stations of the Cross, Christ's final journey to his crucifixion. Though perhaps those are used in some Baptist churches as well. I know they are in Anglican and Episcopalian.

(6,843 posts)Is because Catholics believe they practice the ancient sacrifice at the mass. One cannot separate the original Jewish tradition (before Rabbinical Judiasm) from the Ressurection. The Sacrifice and then the Ressurection together are inseparable.
To be blunt, the corpa is likely too Jewish in meaning for most Protestants.

there probably a million legitimate reasons to jump on this church, but removing a statue because it doesn't fit with their Church shouldn't be one of them. Most protestant churches don't believe in having statues of Jesus or Mary or of any other biblical figure.

(2,787 posts)generally protestants churches don't like to have statues. Don't know why could be anti- Catholic mindset or maybe they want to shift their doctrine so that it is more in line with what protestants have historically believed.

(15,394 posts)He was 25 or 26, had gotten an associate's in radio broadcast technology and was going back and to BBC because he thought he would like to be a youth minister. He's religious but not in your face about it. I came in on Thursday, and I attended classes with him on Friday - one was Spanish, which was one of my majors. So I helped his group when the class was split up to do an in-class assignment. With my help, we finished first, and I got into the following conversation with one of the other people in the group.
Him: So where did you go to college?
Me: Did my undergrad work at Pittsburg State in southeast Kansas then some grad work at Oklahoma State.
Him: In Stillwater? Good ol' Eskimo Joe's (famous bar/restaurant).
Me: Oh, you know it?
Him: Yeah, I lived in Tulsa, and my friends and I would go there on weekends to support local bands we liked when they played.
Me: That's where I live now. Tulsa.
Him: What church do you go to?
Me: (Forgetting where I am) Oh, I don't attend church. I prefer sleeping in on Sundays.
* moment of tense silence *
Him: Well, if you're interested, there's one church on 121st and...
Me: That was your church, wasn't it?
Him: Yeah (starts talking about why I think I would like it)
Me: (How do I shut him up without revealing to everyone I'm essentially an atheist, which will just have the whole class after me? I GOT IT!) Actually, I do go to a church every now and then.
Him: Which one?
Me: St. Francis de Guadalupe - it's a Mexican Catholic church. I get to practice my Spanish, and there's normally a vendor selling yummy things from his bike/ice box contraption after services.
Him: (flatly) That's... nice.
My friend had been listening to the conversation the entire time trying not to laugh and complimented me on using Baptists' ingrain suspicion/dislike of Catholics to get the guy to stop bothering me.

(979 posts)And met several people that went to BBC. They are taught early on from what I can tell to try to increase the flock. They ALWAYS asked me if I had a "home church." When I would say yes, that I had a hometown Presbyterian church, they would say well I feel like you would LOVE our church... they teach the gospel... Ugh. So much loathing from me. Especially now that I'm married to a woman minister and attend her very open and affirming UCC church. Religion doesnt have to be hateful. So much hate flows through BBC for anyone they don't feel "worthy." Its sad.

(15,394 posts)We come from a small farming town in Kansas. When he was getting ready to go there, he was looking at all the requirements for their behavior and saw that men had to be clean-shaven. So he went to our hometown doctor, the only Jewish guy in town, and asked if he could write something that said he couldn't shave that often because of a skin condition (he liked to keep a couple days of stubble). Our doctor looked at him and said, "So you want me, a Jew, to lie to Baptists for you?" *pause* "Okay!"
He also ignored all the requirements for not watching certain shows, listen to particular radio stations, not go to movies, etc. He actually built himself a sound booth out of discarded material in his on-campus single-residence apartment, which he did not break down when he left.
The most fascinating thing about the campus is that everyone - at least the guys - you could go up to and ask them their high score, and they would know what you're talking about. Since there was so little that they could do in town, they would always go to Silver Dollar City where one of the rides was a boat trip through a tunnel where you had light guns that you used to shoot targets while on the ride. Everyone knew their high score.

(11,802 posts)My neighbor came to welcome me to the community and invited me to adult Pentecostal worship with her. Now, I was raised very strict Catholic. But I'm agnostic and have been for a long time. I responded to neighbor lady that I was Catholic. The look on her face was something of a combination of having sucked on a lemon, while desperately trying to appear friendly.
She came over every Wednesday for about a month to invite me to fellowship. I usually hid in my closet with my dogs to pretend I was out/keep them quiet.

(28,151 posts)First off I am surprised so many Catholics support the wingers. Wingers hate anyone not exactly like them and that goes for Catholics too. Old hatreds thrive in religion, I guess cause they're so enlightened...? Anyhow, yeah, let's face it, not a WASP? Yes, we;ll take your support until we have total dominance, then you are expendable.
