Threats of retaliatory tariffs prompted by Trump have cost Iowa pork industry $560M: report

Source: The Hill

Concerns over retaliatory tariffs from Mexico have cost Iowa pork producers roughly $560 million, the Des Moines Register reported Friday.

According to the newspaper, Iowa pork producers could take another hit if Mexico follows through on its threat to impose a 20 percent tariff on hams and pork shoulders from the U.S.

Producers in the state already face a 25 percent tariff on pork exports to China. But duties from Mexico - the largest export market for American pork by volume - could put further strain on producers.

Iowa is the largest pork producer in the U.S., according to Gregg Hora, the president of the Iowa Pork Producers Association. Hora told the Register that the threatened tariffs are "potentially devastating news for Iowa's pig farmers and the rural Iowa economy."

Trump won Iowa's top pork producing county (Sioux) with over 80%. I hope they're having fun.

Too many Iowans are so petty that they'd figure it's some sort of grand sacrifice to have to eat the consequences, and at least the <racial/ethnic/religious/sexual/etc> are getting hurt a lot worse than they are. Along with non-worthy whites.

Especially in Steve King's district, but really all over Iowa. I should know. I've been living in Iowa for damn well near 43 years now.

Hate to sound petty but if someone voted for him, they deserve the consequences because we sure have paid for their idiotic choice. No sympathy indeed!

You voted for this ignorant, vengeful buffoon, and the Republican party still supports him and covers for him. Not sure how you didn't see through his con, but you seem to have thought he couldn't be "that bad." Well... Enjoy your pork futures. And: maybe don't believe everything you hear from FOX next time around, eh?

Every state will be impacted from his tariffs, and with other policy changes he's done, it'll destroy our economy, and there is already signs of it happening. You can't take a trillion out of the budget for Medicaid, or a half of trillion out of Medicare without hurting people, lots of people. He's gone mad, and needs to be removed before its much worse. Both houses of Congress are needed to stop this in Nov. or we are going to lose our Democracy. Vote them all out, if we still can.

"They're going into this with really strong balance sheets," Hayes said.

Even though the trade disruption hurts Iowa farmers, it will help consumers with increased pork supplies.

"If these duties go in place, this would be a great time to fill up your freezer with hams," he said."

—from the Des Moines Register link in the story. That's how they'll spin it: good for consumers. Also that the farmers won't really feel it.

Going out to eat as a vegetarian has become more and more of a headache lately.

I have to question almost every dish I order because bacon seems to be added to everything lately.

On the bright side: glad to see these polluters and torturers feeling some pain.
