Sessions cites Bible in defense of breaking up families, blames migrant parents
Source: NBC News
The attorney general, in a speech to law enforcement officers in Indiana, called on his "church friends" not to blame him for the policy.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Thursday offered a full-throated defense of the Trump administration's policy of separating children from their parents at the border, saying that having kids does not give migrants immunity from prosecution and found justification for his policies in the Bible.
....................................
This bible quote by Sessions says nothing about separating kids from parents!!
...........................
In his remarks, Sessions hit back at the "concerns raised by our church friends about separating families," calling the criticism "not fair or logical" and quoting scripture in his defense of the administration's tough policies.
"Persons who violate the law of our nation are subject to prosecution. I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command in Romans 13 to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained them for the purpose of order," Sessions said. "Orderly and lawful processes are good in themselves and protect the weak and lawful."
He called on religious leaders to "speak up strongly to urge anyone who would come here to apply lawfully, to wait their turn and not violate the law."

And then the Press Sec Sarah Sanders backs him up (no surprise)!
Later Thursday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders doubled down on Sessions' comments, saying it is "very biblical to enforce the law."
"That is actually repeated a number of times throughout the Bible," she said, responding to a question about Sessions' comments about scripture supporting the administration's policies............

Of course, both of them come from a culture where white preachers taught a very selective Gospel to black slaves in order to maintain peace on the plantation. So, gawd's will and all that.

(15,805 posts)cherry picking, amatuer theologians like Sessions and Sanders have to find a different document to prop up their lies. The Constitution demands the rule of law, not mythology, making it ever so much harder to shore up Trump's decisions.

(23,957 posts)let's just go back to Leviticus, one of the nastiest books in the OT, and have a look at what it says about immigrants:
"The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God." -Leviticus 19:34
our dear Dominionist friends, bless their hearts, are only too happy to cite Leviticus when they want to shit on gay rights, but have to resort to vague "follow the law" bullshit when it comes to immigration.
or how about this?
"When you beat the olives from your trees, do not go over the branches a second time. Leave what remains for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow." -- Deuteronomy 24:20
hmm, what possible underlying message might be there?
furthermore, anything the bible says about following the law needs to be carefully evaluated for context, as the bible does at times distinguish between God's laws and, shall we say, Caesar's laws.
damn i know this much, and i'm an atheist. how is it that our superstitious bronze-age forebears could have a more enlightened take on these matters than our self-professed Christian leaders? they cull what they want from the bible wherever they can to justify the positions they already favor, and claim piety. then, when scripture's message goes against their whims, they simply ignore it.

And the King will answer them, Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.
Hebrews 13:1-25
Let brotherly love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body. Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you. ...
These are a few of the over 100 passages that deal with kindness to strangers in your land. I think the tRump administration is in deep doodoo if they are using the Bible to support their border behavior with separating parents and children.

(11,686 posts)Is that next one on sessions list? It seems to me that children and wives who disobey the father/husband are to be put to death ( I may be wrong but I thought I heard that ) is that also on his list? Is he going to justify all of the atrocities the bible teaches? Of course while ignoring the true teachings of love, forgiveness, acceptance, caring, and care for others.

(7,530 posts)To bring these examples into our modern age, would you submit to North Koreas Kim John-un? Would you allow yourself to be subject to Stalin or Genghis Khan?
Would you obey Hitler? Would you give up your Jewish friends or family on the sharp command of an SS soldier?
Noyou wouldnt. That wouldnt be the love that Paul writes about in verse 8. That wouldnt be Biblical. That wouldnt be of Gods character. You would resist, because that would be the only good and righteous choice.
