Family separations could double, says Border Patrol chief in Rio Grande Valley

EDINBURG, TEX. — As outrage mounts over the Trump administration’s separation of hundreds of migrant children from their parents, the person overseeing that zero-tolerance policy on the busiest stretch of the Southwest border said the number of families affected could double.

Manuel Padilla Jr., Border Patrol chief for the Rio Grande Valley, told The Washington Post on Thursday that his agents had separated 568 parents from children as young as 5 since the zero-tolerance policy was announced on April 6. But that figure represented only half the number of parents who could have been prosecuted for entering the country illegally, leaving Border Patrol plenty of room to ramp up family separations.

“We are trying to build to 100 percent prosecution of everybody that is eligible,” he said. “We are not there yet, but that is our intent.”

Padilla’s comments came as angry legislators prepared to visit the Rio Grande Valley Sunday and tour the chief’s facilities.

Border Patrol chief: Number of migrant family separations could double

BY MORGAN GSTALTER - 06/16/18 08:23 PM EDT

The number of migrant families being separated upon crossing into the U.S. along the Southern border could double, according to a Border Patrol chief for the Rio Grande Valley.

Manuel Padilla Jr., the chief in charge of enforcing the Trump administration's "zero-tolerance" policy along the border's most-traveled segment, told The Washington Post on Saturday that the number will continue to increase as Border Patrol works to ramp up its prosecutions of those who cross into the U.S. illegally.

The Trump administration began implementing its zero-tolerance policy last month, stating that the its goal was to deter future immigrants from attempting to make the journey across Mexico into the U.S. The policy seeks to prosecute those crossing into the U.S. illegally, often leading children to be separated from their parents while they await prosecutorial action.

Since April 6 — when the policy was announced — agents have separated 568 parents in the region, Padilla said. Some of the children apprehended are as young as 5 years old, The Post reported.

for ransom. The price? Get Trump's wall built! We cannot cave to this demand. More children will be hurt in the long run, not to mention every other person living in this country.

We should fight to get the separation stopped without giving Trump his wall. It will only embolden him to use equally despicable tactics next time.
