Swarm of quakes felt across region (CA), stronger quake possible in next 24 hours

August 26, 2011 (San Diegos East County) More than 200 earthquakes centered near Brawley in Imperial County have rocked our region in the past 24, many felt by residents across San Diego. The strongest measured 5.5 and 5.3 on the Richter scale; the most recent, a 5.1, rattled the area at 10 p.m.

According to the San Diego County Emergency website, the California Emergency Management Agency (Cal EMA) has conferred with scientists representing the California Geological Survey, US Geological Survey, Cal Tech and the Southern California Earthquake Center. Cal EMA is advising Imperial County that an increased likelihood exists for continued seismic activity for at least the next 24 hours, potentially including earthquakes larger than today's magnitude 5.5 earthquake.
Brawley has previously had swarms of quakes in the 1970s and 1930s. The Brawley fault cluster is tied to the San Andreas fault and is among the most seismically active places in California.
The area has recently been the site of fracking, a process known to cause earthquakes, ECM has learned.

Many schools will be closed tomorrow; a hospital was evacuated and there are reports of damage in the Brawley area primarily, and other nearby areas in Imperial County.
No damage in San Diego reported thus far though lots of people felt these and a larger jolt could cause problems, so stay tuned--we're rockin' and rollin' out here.
Big question I have....were these just normal quakes for the region, which is prone to them, or did the fracking going on out by Brawley have anything to do with this? This is a big geothermal resources area.
UPDATE: Article has been added with links to more info about the fracking though in such a seismically active area there's no way to be sure what caused these quakes:
The area has recently been the site of fracking, a process known to cause earthquakes, ECM has learned. This geothermal well is located at latitude 33.01, longitude 115.53: http://geosteam.conservation.ca.gov/Well/WellDetailPage.aspx?domsapp=1&apinum=02591452 The 5,5 quake was centered at latitude 33.02, longitude 115.55 http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ci15200401#summary
A recent Los Angeles Times editorial detailed the dangers of fracking processes related to geothermal: http://opinion.latimes.com/opinionla/2012/03/fracking-ohio.html. Here is a photo of a geothermal plant on the Salton Sea near Brawley: link to www.pbase.com
This site, posted by fracking opponents, has maps suggesting fracking and drilling are going on atop or near the San Andrea Fault in the Brawley/Salton Sea area:

(10,117 posts)...do fracking near the San Andreas.

(33,982 posts)IIRC, as soon as you stop pumping water into the ground (or water, and a slurry of shit for the fracking process, buncha who knows what chemicals, beyond benzene and some other stuff you wouldn't last long if you drank it) the quakes stop.
That's how the effect was discovered. The Army was pumping waste water into the ground, and geologists noticed the quakes were coming on and stopping with the shifts of the workers doing the pumping.

(140 posts)....Just how many of these Taps have been made. Mainly, it looks as though it is for Geothermal, but some up closer to the san andreas out on the east fringe you get more of the oil types.

(2,749 posts)Link to what? How about YOU prove these earthquakes in an extremely seismically active part of the state/country/world is from fracking? We are talking about the earth's crust moving. Unless aliens are drilling into the earth from space no such pitiful force like fracking could cause a swarm of earthquakes like this. There are faults aplenty in the area, so no, it is not caused by humans.

(149,614 posts)The fracking might have something to do with the quakes. It depends on how much has been done, and probably in what time frame.
OTOH, quakes of this sort are very common there. Lots of faults.

(20,776 posts)There are three Earthquake bots you can follow for updates;
@earthquakeBot
I am a robot that tweets about any earthquakes 5.0 or greater as they happen. I get my data from my robot friend at the USGS. I was programmed by @billsnitzer.
LA QuakeBot @earthquakesLA
I am a robot that tells you about earthquakes in Los Angeles as they happen. I get my data from my robot friend at the USGS. I was programmed by @billsnitzer.
SF QuakeBot @earthquakesSF
I am a robot that tells you about earthquakes in the San Francisco Bay area as they happen. I get my data right from the USGS.
adding this as well:
@tsunamiwatch
A bounced feed from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. We proudly support Handle With Care International - who provide humanitarian aid to impoverished people.
@NewEarthquake
GEO-tagged world earthquakes magnitude 4.5+ and tsunami warnings. Dynamic avatar shows last earthquake. Sources: USGS, NOAA, GEOFON. Worldwide

(2,749 posts)This is not good. A 5.4 is nothing to sneeze at but at least these seem localized though very shallow. And my take is this a natural event and not anything to do with fracking in the area, though I am not familiar with the extent of operations in that area. I am familiar with earthquakes and the one thing that scares me is seeing a quake that is more powerful than the one before it. That happened today. It happened in Japan but that was a subduction quake and land faults act completely differently than subduction zones such as the one off the coast of Japan. At any rate I always encourage people to have bottled drinking water, canned food and propane in case we have an event that prevents us from cooking or going to the grocery store for a few days. Also have batteries, flashlights (no candles please unless it's really, really necessary), maybe some supplies for temporary repairs. And everyone should have a good first aid kit with the basics.

(51,666 posts)in combination, makes me very nervous.
I went through Northridge. I am much more attuned now to a change in the pattern of our quakes. These oddball clusters can be seen before big quakes.

The week-long animation is currently (8 AM PDT) showing 483 quakes, about 400 of them in the last 24 hours.
