GOP Platform: Abortion Ban Approved By Republicans In Tampa

Source: huffingtonpost.com

TAMPA, Fla. — Republicans emphatically approved a toughly worded party platform at their national convention Tuesday that would ban all abortions and gay marriages, reshape Medicare into a voucher-like program and cut taxes to energize the economy and create jobs.

The document opens by warning that while the American Dream has long been of equal opportunity for everyone, "Today that American Dream is at risk." It pledges that the GOP will "begin anew, with profound changes in the way government operates; the way it budgets, taxes and regulates."

If they get full power (White House, Senate, House) this country is finished.

We've had years to do something about the lack of church-state separation.

Years to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine (which would have all but silenced Limbaugh).

Years to sue Fox News for lying.

Years to insist on trials for the war criminals.

and...

Nothing.

Meanwhile, the nuts have all the power and all the prospects.

We're not being done in by a small group of evildoers. We're being killed by our friends and neighbors who seem to think all this corruption is fine.

And by the power-hungry preachers who dream of theocracy.

And by those who refuse to criticized their own (D) when their own betray them.

The entire country is shit.

And we let it happen.

I am amazed that no one is calling them on these violations, just amazed. I was hoping the Occupy movement would get on that.

2. That plank, or something equivalent, has been in every GOP platform starting in 1976

Which was also the LAST year the GOP platform expressed support for the now-defunct Equal Rights Amendment, which the GOP had supported at least in principle since 1940.

The 1980 platform expressed support for well-meaning people who supported OR OPPOSED the ERA.

By 1984 all it had was a vague statement that the GOP has "historically" supported equal rights for all people.

In the chaos that followed Nixon's resignation, the GOP built a coalition by selling its soul to the extreme religious right. That's the truth about why the GOP is what it is today.

Did not Romney say that abortion is not on the ballot? Who should we believe, the nominee or the party?

... that an appropriate agenda item is banning a constitutionally guaranteed right? I know, I know, this Supreme Court would love to overturn Roe v. Wade, but, for the time being, it's black letter law, until such time as the court overturns it. Since when do political parties name as their agenda items that are within the exclusive jurisdiction of another branch of government? That would be like the executive branch proposing to pass legislation when they have zero authority to do so. Or do they imagine that they can get a constitutional amendment passed banning abortion? Good luck with that. So, really, they're just blowing smoke out of their asses as usual, throwing some red meat to the slavering base, right?

The social-conservative right gives a lot of money to the GOP. They need that money and votes in order to win. So they throw this stuff in the platform. Just like for the Ron Paul folks they threw in the gold standard thing. Everyone knows that's not going to happen.

Democrats do the same thing too on other issues. The parties pass a platform at these conventions. It's more or less a guide and helps get your overall message out there of what the party stands for and strives to achieve. It helps for fundraising. It's helps unite the party, creates a debate, etc.. But there is nothing legally that holds a candidate bound to it. The PERSON is president, not the party.

I think they know they're fucked at the presidential level because of who they're running. Their current challenge is to not lose too many seats in the House and Senate, and to do that they have to get people to the polls. That's what this platform is all about--300 pounds of red meat for the teabagger lions' den.
