As Republican convention emphasizes diversity, racial incidents intrude
Source: Washington Post
TAMPA From the convention stage here, the Republican Party has tried to highlight its diversity, giving prime speaking slots to Latinos and blacks who have emphasized their partys economic appeal to all Americans. But they have delivered those speeches to a convention hall filled overwhelmingly with white faces, an awkward contrast that has been made more uncomfortable this week by a series of racial headaches that have intruded on the partys efforts to project a new level of inclusiveness.
The tensions come amid a debate within the GOP on how best to lure new voters. The nations shifting demographics have caused some Republican leaders to worry not only about the partys future but about winning in November, particularly in key swing states such as Virginia and Nevada. The demographics race were losing badly, said Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (S.C.). Were not generating enough angry white guys to stay in business for the long term.
That followed an on-air shouting match between MSNBC host Chris Matthews and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus over whether presidential nominee Mitt Romney was injecting race into the campaign by joking about President Obamas birth certificate and attacking his record on welfare reform.
Theres no doubt he did, Matthews declared. Garbage, Priebus retorted.

(14,881 posts)white guys. Therein lies the problem. Mitt's 5 sons notwithstanding, the trend is away from increasing the white population overall, including the white male population. Fewer white guys to get pissed off means fewer angry white guys.

(1,214 posts)I'm a white guy, and I'm angry. Several of my white guy friends are angry too. At the Republicans! And we're voting for Obama and the Democrats in general.
One thing I'm angry about is how the right-wing talks about Latinos. Another is the way they treat women. There are other things I'm angry over, but I'm not going to list all the outrageous things that have been said and done by the Republicans. I'm just going to state that my wife is a Latino woman (a US citizen), and guess what - she is a *former* Republican!

(17,108 posts)I've loved the Democratic Party (warts, mis-steps, and all) since President John Kennedy, and I've been pissed off at all Republicans since Tricky Dick ("I Am Not A Crook" Nixon.

(14,881 posts)to paraphrase HRH addressing the Latino community, "you people know how to party!"

(13,435 posts)Well, Ann Romney is liberal ... with the phrase "you people." I would expect this may become an issue if she keeps it up. (definitely fits the "HRH" moniker)

We kicked you when you were down, and we kept kicking you, but you're not angry enough yet, so the punishments shall continue. Is that what he means?
