Outgoing Mississippi governor pardons 2 killers

By the CNN Wire Staff
updated 3:16 PM EST, Mon January 9, 2012

(CNN) -- In his last days in office, outgoing Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour pardoned two men convicted of murder, a state official said Monday.

"David Gatlin and Joseph Ozment had received full pardons and they were released yesterday at 1 p.m.," said Suzanne Singletary, spokeswoman for the Mississippi Department of Corrections. Both men were serving life sentences, she said.

"It is at any governor's discretion," she said.

Gatlin was convicted of murder, aggravated assault and burglary of a residence, Singletary said. Ozment was convicted of murder, conspiracy and armed robbery in a separate case. Both inmates were at minimum security level, she said.

WTF is up with that? Wonder who those guys had to blow to get that job.

Or maybe they have pictures of Gov. Foghorn Leghorn in a compromising position with a goat.

West Virginia - past tense as he died in 2010. He wrote this in 1944:

"I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side ... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds."

He held several KKK leadership posts: He was a Kleagle (recruiter) and an Exalted Cyclops, the top officer in the local Klan unit, a position he won unanimously.

He said time and time again that he was wrong for his KKK activities and apologized again and again. In 2005, he said the following, " "I know now I was wrong. Intolerance had no place in America. I apologized a thousand times ... and I don't mind apologizing over and over again. I can't erase what happened."

If he hadn't twice used the N-word in a 2001 interview, I might have believed he was sincere.

Well, I saw a Mel Brooks documentary once where a black sheriff dressed up on a KKK robe and hood...

"Does not speak in any way to the possibility that Haley Barbour is a possible UNadmitted KKK member." Gotta love it, the real KKK leader is exalted and excused while the politician with no known KKK ties is presumed guilty based on stereotypes (i.e. political racial profiling). And nice subliminal pun linking the UN to the KKK. I'm afraid, however, that it may have been too subtle.

KKK allegations fall in there with the Nazi rule - the first one in a thread who goes nazi or KKK loses.

The bigger point being that there are plenty of real issues to throw back at Barbour. Just like Bush, CBS, and the fake guard records - as soon as that 1st lie is uncovered, whatever truths there may have been are thrown out with the dirty laundry.

it's just as possible that you are a secret KKK member and you only knew about him because you recognized him from one of you "meetings", isn't it?

You didn't hear this from me, but Haley has been known to sell pardons to GOP contributors as well.

Amazing trade-off.

Is this what happened when Arkansas' Governor Mike Huckabee did when he pardoned another prisoner who promptly went out and spread true disaster immediately?

The one guy walked into the room and shot his estranged wife in the head while she was holding holding her baby. Then he shot his wife's boyfriend in the head also. The boyfriend survived.

And he gets a pardon right after the parole board denied him parole? That isn't right.
